View Full Version : Dell PowerEdge 400SC for $349 or $448 after MIR
I guess no one noticed this:
Go here (gotapex link). (http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=37628499&siteid=38421795&bfpage=datafeed&durl=HTTP://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=pe400scsapp%26cs=04%26dgvcode=ss%26c=US%26l=EN&bfinfo=999) You have a choice of either a 2.26GHz computer for $349 after MIR or the 2.8GHz for $448 after MIR. Make sure you select either free processor upgrade from the first menu. All of the selections have already been made for you for that price. I would add the gray keyboard and Logitech System Mouse in gray since they appear to be free (but are not selected so you don't get them unless you select them).
I'd get one but I already bought the 2.8GHz PowerEdge 400SC about a month ago.
I just noticed that this ends tonight!!!

That's a pretty good deal. I got my 2.4-C PE 400SC on the last deal for $310.xx (after tax & MIR). I should have gotten the 2.8-C instead for an additional $99.

My 3.2GHZ 400SC was $539, and the 2.8GHZ 400SC was $352. Both prices are after taxes and rebates.
The 3.2GHZ has an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, an Audigy 2 soundcard, NEC 1300A +/- DVD writer and 1GB (2 X 512MB) PC3200 memory. It'll be my primary computer after I move everything over.
I'm thinking of making the 2.8GHZ a HTPC. I'll have to do some research on what TV and sound card to get. The lack of internal drive space doesn't bother me since I'll be using external drive enclosures.

what kind of drive enclosures are you using?

You can't get an video card upgrade with this server from Dell since Dell doesn't support AGP & audio.

I've been looking at getting one of the PowerEdge servers, but I would like less noise than what I currently have(3 80mm SmartFan 2's and a 120mm). Those that have the 400SC, how much noise do they make?

I got one for my sister, and it is absolutely silent pretty much all the time. Only time that it was slightly noticeable was when I fired up UT for a few rounds. But normal day-to-day usage, it's utterly silent. I might pick up another one for lan use or for my mom.
The first time I fired mines up I thought I forgot to plug the power in it was so quiet. I later installed a pair of noisy SCSI drives in it and it's a bit noisier but not even close to how noisy my old system was. With a quiet IDE drive in there you would have a hard time telling it was on, at least it was the case for me.

Guys, I have a few questions about this system before I dig in:
- Can you use regular, non-ECC RAM?
- So this mobo can support 400mhz, 533mhz, AND 800mhz FSB CPU's?
- How big a deal is it if AGP is not "officially supported"?
- ^^^ Same with sound ^^^
Thanks!

1. Yes
2. Yes (if you get the P4 CPU)
3. Dell won't provide support if you have problems with install the video card via AGP slot. Same with sound. Both work though.

Regarding #2, the reason I asked is because it seems that the i875P supports both P4's and Celerons....is that true? It would seem so since the 2.0Ghz Celeron (400mhz FSB) is the standard CPU on this deal but they also offer the 533 and 800mhz P4's, but I want to be 100% sure :) Thanks again for your help!
