I ordered this late last night. I did get an order confirmation. Anyone else order this? I hope that this is not going to be dishonored due to a "price mistake". I am currently building a new system, and would love to have this for the monitor.

We're talking about the Dell Planar 17" LCD monitor with 16ms response time for $310 right? I ordered one as well and I got an acknowledgement email and a confirmation email. One question, what if my monitor gets to me and it has a dead pixel, should I return it? What is the acceptable amount of dead pixels with these new lcd's, if any?

i think if you recieve it and there's a dead pixel, then you would be able to return it. however, in order to get it serviced (via dell's service or the manufacture's) i'm almost sure that there is a designated percentage that has to be dead before they'll even look at it (knowing this from working at best buy). but you know, if you have one dead pixel..eventually you'll have more later.

I think that if you have a dead pixel, you can call Dell and try to have them replace it. I have heard that their CS on something like that is pretty good.

It's a very good price for a 17" LCD but I'm looking for larger screen.

I Ordered it for our daughter last night (Saturday) and they sent me a second email with an estimated ship date of:
ESTIMATED SHIP DATE(s):
On or before Nov 12, 2003

For $310.95 no tax no shipping cost its a nice deal.

I ordered one, although I would have preferred a slightly larger screen, as well. The problem is, you don't get an increase in resolution until you get to 20" at 1600x1200, which is still more than I'm willing to spend. $310 shipped is an awesome price considering there's no rebate hassle and it has DVI. Even the low-end models that have dual input are usually over $400...

Can't wait to get my 19" CRT off my desk...of course, there's always dual monitors...;)

How are planar's lcd's compared to others within it's price range? I recently purchased a Dell E171FPb (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=320-0657&c=us&l=en&cs=19&category_id=4009&page=external) 17" a couple months back for $320 shipped and lookin for an upgrade.

Also can anybody throw me some links to reviews for the planar PX171M lcd? Thanks.

I ordered one of these as well. I did some seasrching around the net for reviews and found everyone of them to be 4-5 stars out of 5. I also found THIS (http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=planar17&page=1) review for the gaming aspect of the monitor.

From what I see it is a great deal. I just wish I could have gotten all black.

Just took a look at the thread at FW. Looks like the possibility of getting this deal is somewhat high. A couple of peeps have called Dell CSR and have not been told that the orders have been cancelled. It is only Sunday, however, so lets see what happens when the big boys show up on Monday morning to decide how this thing will pan out.

Good luck to all that got in while they could.

vic,

don't mean to be rude, but if you know those people, tell them NOT to call. that's what gets attention too.

1. people call, tell other people the deal ISN'T cancelled (check online about your order...)

2. people listen and say really? then they call. go back to 1. repeat.

i jumped in on this deal, and i hope it goes through too .... but dell states they're not responsible for typographical errors.

If you card has been charged, it's very hard for Dell to back out now. Now I could set up my dual CRT/LCD setup with my PowerEgde 400SC. The Dimension 4550 will be hooked up to my current 19" CRT via a KVM switch.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I, unfortunately, do not know any of these guys and I have never posted there (at FW) before.

Lets see how this will shake down later today, since it is the first business day of the week. Orders will start to be filled or get cancelled. I would hate to be a mangaer over at Dell and have to walk into something like this on a Monday. :)

STOP THE MADNESS! The main reason I do 95% of my posting here is because people are sane. I don't hang out on FW much other than browsing because there are so many paranoid willy nillies over there it makes me sick.

ONE guy will say something like "I doubt if this will go through" and then the masses of IDIOTS start a 500 post thread about how Dell "had better come through or I'll...".

It's disgusting. Just place your Farcking order and shut the fark up and wait for it to show up on your door. Now quit with the they might do this or that and if your rank is Plebe, DO NOT post that you called and they cancelled your order cuz I know your just a troll trying to set off the idiots that are lurking here right now.

i dunno. i think it'd be awesome to have an LCD, just cause it's brighter than crt, most of the time at least. and when i get a dvi vid card it should look better!

I've never tried by saving the emailed cart, but I know that quite often, if you save a cart with a deal in it and you wait till the deal is dead, the item vanishes from your cart without a trace.

That's exactly why I was wondering--My only order from Dell so far has been my Sony digital camera which shipped the same day I ordered it and arrived in Hawaii the next day (FedEx being the only shipping option to Hawaii)...I have to pay FedEx shipping on this monitor, also, which added somewhat to the price but I think it's a little strange for the order to show "in-production" for 3 days, even if two of those days were a Sunday and a Holiday...

Maybe you're right and they're just slow...I hate waiting for stuff!:P

Just got an email from dell's "Order Watch Confirmation"

Says new ship date is: 11/19/03
I called to see what the delay was and the csr told me that they are awaiting a part for it, hmmm?
She could not tell me anything else.

I would like to know what kind of part is needed for a new monitor.
As far as I know Planar is not a dell product so I would not think they assemble the actual monitor at dell.

Anyone else know or hear anything?

And for Dells automated phone system - IT SUCKS!! - just my 2cents...

Joshua
11-12-2003, 10:05 AM
Most likely it is an automated category that classifies the cause of the delay. If it says it's waiting on a part, it's prolly cuz the system was designed for computers and a monitor is considered a part. Long story short, with the huge number of orders they got for this thing they're prolly out of stock. I'd go check my Ingram Micro account to see national stock levels, but I'm too lazy. :P

Ingram Micro is the distributor that most stores/retailers get their technology/computer related merchandise from. When you go to a store and they're selling a netgear router, most likely that store bought it wholesale from Ingram Micro or another major distributor. They almost never get it direct from the manufacturer.

And Yes, you have to have a business in order to get an account.

Word has it that some people are getting different monitors sent and not the Planar they ordered.

I checked this (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?threadid=687590) thread.

This from the dell forum from a moderator on the order status forum:

The information that I just received is that the Notify team will be contacting those who ordered the Planar PX171 flat panel monitors to let them know that there is a long lead on these monitors. They will let you either wait for them or offer you a special price on a high-performance Mitsubishi NX86 18” flat panel display. The special deal is only avalable for those who ordered Dell SKU A0081875 between Nov 7th and Nov 9th and only available for those who decide to cancel their original order based upon the shipment delay

this is just getting f-ing ridiculous.

i mean i understand that they got flooded with several hundred/thousand orders, and dell seems to be handling this very poorly. i personnally can wait the 60 day (rumored) wait time. my concern is that my card was already charged. I don't want to have any finance charges on this for 60 days so i called...just fyi, if you've been charged, your card will be frozen for that amount and supposedly you won't/shouldn't get charged finance charge -- that's what the dell guy said.

is this true? i'm calling my cc anyways to verify.

I got this:

Dear Valued Customer,

You recently purchased from Dell the Planar 17 inch Flat Panel Monitor (DELL SKU: A0081875) between 11/07/03 -11/09/03. Although we had anticipated being able to ship your order within the quoted lead time, we are experiencing an unexpected delay due to unanticipated demand and supply constraints. We estimate that it may take at least sixty days for us to fulfill all outstanding orders, although some customers may receive their order earlier due to product availability. We apologize for this inconvenience, and are doing everything we can to get your order out to you as quickly as possible. If your payment method was by credit card, your card will not be charged until the monitor is shipped.

Please remember, however, that you have the right to cancel your order without choosing any substitute product, and if you do not respond to this email by November 20, we will assume you wish to cancel your order without ordering the alternative monitor.

i just got that too ... i was really worried. i thought they were saying you can either cancel OR buy that other monitor.

since i'm in no rush, i'll wait for it, seems like a good deal. and if i find better, i'll just cancel that order.

if i reply, dell better follow through in 60 days, OR ELSE!

I talked to a Planar rep the day I canceled my order and they told me that there is no way they can meet the demand for orders that Dell took on for the Planar monnitor they offered.

Who knows if this csr at Planar knew what she was talking about but that is why I canceled my order that day and went out and locally and bought a lcd monitor, did not want to wait around and find out 60+ days from that time.

My order status just changed from "in production" to "shipped". I called Dell CSR and got an Airborne Express tracking number. Order detail shows that it's the Planar, possibly even the Black one instead of the black/silver. Either one is fine with me...

FWIW, I never received the infamous "take the crappy Mitsubishi monitor for more money" email from Dell...

I am sure you guys knew this already but those of you hanging on for the Planar might consider this

http://www.planar.com/Products/Accessories/Video_EX.html

As an optional add on to turn this puppy into a TV or Video monitor as well. I am considering keeping one of the two I ordered now. They were both originally slated a xmas presents for family but since we might miss christmas on the delivery anyhow...

Now all we need is a deal on it .... :).... Oops, wrong forum for that.

Um, so you're basically saying you're in the same boat as the rest of us?

<$.02>

I don't think Dell OWES any of us anything. I won't cry or b1tch or complain. I will be happy if I get the monitor at all at this great price. Dell COULD easily cancel all of our orders right now and be perfectly within their rights to do so. They haven't. They instead, are working directly with the manufacturer to get these out to us. The manufacturer can't make them fast enough.

If you're not happy and think you can do better elsewhere, then cancel your order. I can't feel sorry for you because you think you should get an even bigger deal than the one we're already in on.

So go complain to BBB, the Secret Service, Colin Powell and your mommy, cuz they'll all tell you that Dell is handling this well. They are letting your order continue, if you can't wait, they are offering you alternatives. If even that doesn't make you happy, you can cancel. They do not have your money, you are not "stuck" with them in any way.

Please cry elsewhere. Here is a sad, sad song, just for you: :drums: :guitar:

Just got mine---:D

Dell subbed the black model for the silver one without asking me but black would have been my first choice so that's fine. I know a lot of people have had to make a lot of calls to get substitutions made and a bunch more have their orders simply labeled "delayed". I still think it's strange that I never got any emails from Dell. And I still think Dell has got a REALLY strange order filling system--it's not FIFO, and it's not LIFO...More like drawing names out of a hat. Can't wait to get this thing hooked up tonight...

This is the E-mail I got from dell, after I asked for an estimated ship date:

(mine are still "in production" BTW)

Dear Tim,

Thank you for contacting Dell Online Customer Care.

I apologize for the inconvenience and frustrations that this
matter may have caused.

I have gone through your account, and it shows that your order
is currently in back order. Due to multiple factors involved,
Dell is not able to guarantee delivery dates. The lead-time is
an estimated shipping date based on conditions at the time the
order is placed. Although this estimate is usually accurate,
certain conditions may cause the lead-time to change. Every
effort is being done to fulfill your order.

I am sorry that I am unable to provide the estimated ship date.
You may have the option to cancel your order since this item
has not been charged yet to your account.

Once again, I apologize and truly regret any inconvenience or
frustration this matter may have caused. estimates ship dates.

If there is anything additional that you need, please feel free
to visit our online Customer Care center at: www.Dellcustomercare.com

Thank you for your time and patience in this matter. They have
both been greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful day!

I still like the Planar more than the Mitsu even it's 1" larger. Response time is better, 15ms vs. 25ms.

Yea, I know that Planar screen has better specs in every aspect, but I have a desktop sitting without a screen... so I figured to take the alternate.

You can call Dell CS and they can look it up for you or you can log onto the Dell Customer Care Order Status Forum and ask the moderator to look it up for you. Mine never did show a tracking number online--I had to call to get it. Probably going to be shipped Airborne Express if the tracking number isn't posted on your order status page. Good luck!

Go with native resolution which should be 1280 by 1024 otherwise it'll look like crap.

LCD's are generally not like CRT's as far as adjusting the picture.

But at that resolution, the refresh rate is 60 hertz. You'll go blind sitting in front of it for 5 minutes.

Not true. LCD's don't refresh the way that CRT's do (with the scan lines scrolling down the screen).

60hz is actually great for an LCD. It will not impact the picture in the least. You really won't see any benefit by running it at a higher refresh rate.

I have this Planar LCD and love it...I got it back in June and have been very impressed with it since...I tried to change the refresh rate to 70 and it looked fine until I tried to play a DVD on it...The picture was distorted...I changed my refresh back to 60 and the picture looks great...I have not tried the speakers as my Logitech Z680's don't need any help....Great Monitor!! Games look great on it too! (Battlefield 1942)

Anyone else have this problem?

One of these was an XMAS present for father-in-law who is older. They currently use a 17 inch trinitron running at 800*600 (not a bad monitor in its day). This Planar monitor although gorgeous at the higher resolution looks only so-so at 800-600 because it is not the native resolution.

The icons are too small for him at 1280*1024 Now he "thinks" he wants his old monitor back even if it means yielding back room on the desk.

You always want to run the LCD at its native resolution. You could always make the icons bigger at 1280x1024 so I don't know what's the problem.

i find that running 1024x768 on a 15" LCD, the icons are the same size as running 1280x1024 on a 17" LCD. (my Planar rocks! :D )

Ok, try this for me someone.

When you have your monitor on and you reboot windows, do you encounter any problems?

My computer will reboot (Dell PowerEdge 400SC), but right when it gets to the windows login screen, the monitor goes Wiggy. Like it will turn all white with streaks and lines of color. Also at this moment it becomes unresponsive. Like I press power and it will not turn off. I have to actually unplug the monitor and plug it back in, and then it works.

I'm going to call planar and utilize their awesome warrenty, but I wanted to see if anyone else has the same problem.

i haven't had problems at all... you're sure it's your monitor? if you can, try a different monitor. could be the vid card....but it's prolly the monitor. c'mon, what can you expect from a $300 LCD?!?! ( :) )

=) I Called and bitched about the 60 day lead time with some BS about the 2 monitors I ordered being Christmas presents and got them to drop another $25 off each monitor.

So I guess I got mine for like $285 each. (Sorry for bragging).

So now the delema is, do I send it back ASAP, or do I live with it for 3 years and then send it back at the end of the warrenty period.... Will they still make this model in 3 years? .... or will I get a newer better model then.

I got mine, and its PIMP.

The neatest thing is the 90 degree rotation into portrait mode.
