anyone know how to hint a video so that it can be streamed

under file>export>using quicktime conversion
Then hit the options button and should be at the bottom of the dialog box to select hinting. You can also do this with compressor which I personally like better to deal with when I'm exporting just 'cause of the nice batch feature.

wat is the batch feature and what does it do? also going along with j8choi's question, is compressor the program that comes with final cut pro 4?

Yes compressor comes with Final Cut Pro 4, part of many other things in the package.
I like compressor for exporting because of batching. Lets say I have a video and need to deliver it in 3 different forms of sizes, compressor allows me to set the codecs and such for the video and does it all at once. Also you batch up a bunch of videos all at once, great for setting up and walking away instead of having to export each file once at a time.

ok so i have my movie from my camera onto final cut pro then i chose export-> quicktime conversion -> options -> hinted file stream and then i ran it and it takes a few hours and then when its almost done it comes with a general error. I tried compressing it first then doing it and it doesnt work. When I open the compressor program, i can not drag my movie file into the box. Is there something im missing?

Hmm thats real odd. . . not sure what that could be. You can also add hinting with quicktime pro. If you have the file compressed already, open up quicktime and do it from there in the export options. You can add hinting without having to recompress anything.
Just out of curiousity what system and OS are you running FCP on? And what does the error say exactly?

running mac os 10.2 jaguar and fcp 4.0, the error just says "General Error"

did you get the newest updates for fcp and all of its componenets? And is that 10.2.6 or .8 or?

i tried using quick time pro to hint it but i got a error saying unknown error type -2125 i looked that up and it says fileoffset too large error or something. also, how would i use compressor to hint it? when i go to preset i set it on mpeg4 ntsc for fast cable streaming, there was no option for hinting

you would have to create a new setting in compressor that includes hinting.
