Been playing it on pc and I must say, WOW. Its what Midnight Club 2 should have been. I liked Midnight Club 2 and had a high opinion of it until I played this and boy does this smoke it. Screen shots to be posted soon...
I saw an ad for it and it looked drop dead gorgeous.

ok, so have you played gran turismo 3? i'm wondering if there's a PC game similar (racing -> money -> buy cool stuff!). though GT3 has a TON of cars ... i wanna see it on PC :)

There is nothing close to GT3 on pc unfortunately. But this game is good.
Here is my current ride catching a little air coming over a hill.

Moreso than Midnight Club, less so than Gran Turismo.

NFS underground looked like 2fast 2furious for console game play. Rice is for eating not for playing. Now i simply got this impression from the commmerical, it may be misrepresentitive of the game.

Its definitly rice, but that doesn;t mean its bad. I pretty much hate the sci fi genre, but when a game is good a game is good.
Oh, and if you don;t think there will be american muscle mods, you're crazy. ;)

I do not doubt that abit, I just dont like to play games where cheap sh1.tty cars like sentra's are made out to be awsome racing machines. And Where they are actually put into a game. Like all games they appeal to all types of people. I like games that have physics that are really realistic and have awsome graphics and that you can upgrade the crap out of a car.

So you like one car game, since only one game exists that is as you describe.

The best feeling in the world is knowing that you avoided a head-on collision because you launched yourself over the oncoming car. A close second is cutting an opponent off and forcing them into a head-on collision at 150 MPH. :D

for driving games, what do you guys use for a controller?
keyboard/mouse? gamepad? wheel?

I use a Logitech Wingman cordless gamepad - but I'd really rather use a steering wheel with pedals and gear-shifter.
I used to use a Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle, which is one of those tilt-control devices. It worked pretty well for the most part.

I use mouse and keyboard. I'm used to it so it poses no problems for me.

ok, so you people with NFSU on PC, have any problems installing? i emailed EA tech support and am still waiting, but i get the problem of the game ALMOST starting, but going right back to the desktop, i tried all of their troubleshooting ideas. i have an up to date computer, except for my geforce2 vid card. though it is under the requirements.
so if you had similar problems, maybe some tips would help :)

yeah, did that too .... what i SHOULD do, is install on my dad's computer, but sadly, i have the best vid card in the house! until xmas that is :) (9800np)
hmm, actually i should test the USB devices connected to the computer. i THINK i've had that problem before: things not working when certain devices are on.

Just beat KOTOR so I'm back to this game. I'm on race 104. Getting close to the end. I heard that if you beat the game you have to start over, so I suppose I won't be actually beating the last race.

starting over all new? or some harder level like diablo ii?
i figured out my problem. some USB device was causing a problem.
it was either:
hp all in one printer*
midisport 2x2
logic audio security key*
prolly not the digital cam cause nothing was connected*
*on 4port usb hub
OR, it was my gravis plugged into the 4port hub
i had a problem like this before, having some USB problem when trying to use an app

yeah, my friend beat the game today on xbox. i guess there are 111 races or something? but then there's a bonus race. after that it says if you want to do underground, you need to make a new player. you can still race your cars though.
Grumpy
12-06-2003, 11:32 PM
I havee 27 more races to go before I beat the game.
Just got Underground today... overall impressions- graphics are ok (emphasis on OK.. it's M$ DirectX. that's nothing compared to what it would have looked like on OpenGL)
Gameplay is alright.. NFS versions 5 and below are still better (once EA took over, the game just went south).
(pretty much) Only ricers would enjoy this.

Thats what I meant. What would be different graphically with OpenGL?

Played this most of the weekend. Its a lot of fun. Even for a non-ricer. I don't like the way the mechinical upgrades work. And I also don't like the way you switch from one car to another. You should be able to do a compare and contrast within the same page. Gets irritating after a while. Graphics are alright, i think its missing a replay button tho. Would be nice to have that. Playability is pretty cool. Doesn't feel realistic, but its better than Hot Pursuit. Overall, I'm enjoying it :)
I do think they need more European cars & American cars.
OpenGL (http://www.cprogramming.com/tutorial/openglvs.html)
Once u play enough OpenGL games, and then play a DirectX game, you will notice the difference right away.
Cantacuzene
12-08-2003, 04:58 PM
I've played a lot of both, thank you. I actually find Direct3d to be superior in terms of visual quality. You didn;t mention what graphical improvements would have been in the game had they used openGL.
Then it must be you trying to think it's better  Hardcore gamers would rather have OpenGL over DirectX.
Cantacuzene
12-08-2003, 09:55 PM
If you were so hardcore you would know that DirectX isn't a graphical API, Direct3d is. DirectX is far more than just graphics. You are comparing apples to oranges.
When DirectX is mentioned these days, it is usually referring to the graphics portion of it (Direct 3D). Where did i say i was "hardcore"?
and if you even bothered to click the link you would know.
Cantacuzene
12-08-2003, 10:12 PM
Oh I clicked it and read it. I'd liek to point out that we are now like 10 posts deep and you've yet to say which graphical improvements would be in the game if it used the OpenGL API.

i know that games on the computer are often better. you have more keys, more memory and a better OS.
however, i don't own a computer. i have a laptop from work that is decent but it's def not a gaming machine.
plus, i have my xbox hooked up to my surround system.
anyhow, i know the xbox has limitations but i really like it.

AntiAliasing and Antisoptric Filtering basically they take the game engine and render it a hell of a lot prettier.

You know that Dell 400SC that is to be had for ~$300 pick that bad boy up, as a starter machine for the house. Then you can join the 31337 group of having a computer @ home :heh:
I have my ps2 hooked up to my current (albeit VERY modest) home theater, and previously i had the receiver and speakers hooked up with my computer (i like noise :D). You could, if you really wanted to be cool, take your console(s) and play them on your new computer thus probably freeing up a tv for the family, and giving you a You place

If there is a no to any of these, it is still a wussy room.
however. If you want to make it up to the Male Gods Everywhere (tm) You will need at least a full sized pool table, darts, a dartboard, and a built in full wet (or dry depending on how u like to dance :P) bar.

i have wired the walls for 6.1 surround. just have to finish mudding the drywall. it will have the theater system, a ping-pong table, hopefully a pac-man (tabletop) machine, my xbox, a fridge recessed in the wall, and a nice reading area.
i'm not much of a pool player and i don't really want to spend the money on a nice table even though many of my friends would play.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800Pro with all the options turned on. I run Need For Speed Underground with all the options turned on.
The graphics are the best that I've ever seen in any video game. There's no lag, and the gameplay is perfect.
When I buy a house I'll be getting a projector, so the gaming can only get better.
