Who would do manual labor? Sure, some women would want to, but I doubt they'd be able to fill all of the "craptacular" jobs that some men do

right, because women are incapable of manual labor. i guess they'd probably just die.

Well, find me a substantial number of female auto and truck mechanics, autobody repair personnel, roofers, tree cutters, plumbers, electricians, heating and air conditioning service people, etc. I could go on and on, but the simple truth is that women are not interested in these jobs and they never will be.
It's nice to preach equality in the work force, but when it comes to "grunt work" or work which requires an intense amount of analytical thought, most females will avoid these jobs like the plague.
And unfortunately, in the white collar mode that we have been in for twenty or thirty years in America, a lot of guys avoid them, too.

besides if we had to step up to the plate and do those jobs, we could. we just let you have 'em and the added stress b/c we know it would shorten our lifespan. ;)

Actually, I know a lot of women who would/do enjoy doing those jobs.... Some of my female friends actually planned to go into those occupations only to be steered away by family and friends.
I do agree with your last paragraph, though. This is a social issue, not a sexual equallity issue. Manual labor is looked down on by our society even though it is absolutely essential. I know plumbers who make as much as some lawyers, but becuase they are a "laborer," they are looked at as a lower-class citizen.

i know plenty of females who would be rather offended by your contention that they will avoid work requring an intense amount of analytical thought "like the plague".
and i don't disagree that there are more male plumbers or auto mechanics, or whatever. but to assert, as skiatomic did, that in the absence of men, those jobs would not get done is rather illogical.
assume for a minute that men do become useless and therefore extinct (this is of course an irrational assumption, but this how discussion is irrational, so i think we're ok). so now we have a huge number of manual labor jobs available.
assuming that women truly don't want to do this work (and why would they - i don't think most men want to do it either), then there will be a sub-optimal number of people in these professions. as a result, scarcity will drive up the salaries and then people will take these jobs not because they're interested in them, but because they pay well.
so the work would still get done; money would just be distributed in another way.

But if men suddenly vanished, America would revert to a very primitive society, much like Africa. Cars would not get repaired, things would not get built, furnaces would not be maintained and on and on. Therefore, these jobs would disappear. Salaries would drop to such meager levels that everyone's survival would be at stake.
When I think of the importance of certain jobs, I think of Gilligans Island. On that show, there were the workers and the thinkers.
Obviously, the jobs requiring manual labor are the most critical; the ones requiring only brain power can be forgotten in a heartbeat.

this is quite possibly the stupidest argument ever. :heh:
my answer to arguments like this is to refer back to what seinfeld episode might have a bearing on the situation. based on that, i believe johhny is correct.
Elaine: How come he's gettin' so smart? I stopped having sex with Ben three days ago and I don't know no Portuguese?
Jerry: Are you all right?
Elaine: I don't know. It's just the last coupla days my mind has been, not good.
Jerry: Wait a second, I know what's happening. The no sex thing is having a reverse effect on you.
Elaine: What? What are you talking about?
Jerry: To a woman, sex is like the garbage man. You just take for granted the fact that any time you put some trash out on the street, a guy in a jumpsuit's gonna come along and pick it up. But now, it's like a garbage strike. The bags are piling up in your head. The sidewalk is blocked. Nothing's getting through. You're stupid.
Elaine: I don't understand.
Jerry: Exactly.

so you honestly think women avoid work that requires analytical thought? i thought better of you, johnny.
so anyway, last time i checked, there were plenty of men in africa. so by your logic, everything should be a-ok over there.
and the notion that jobs requiring brain power could easily be forgotten while maintaining our current level of work is just illogical. that is not to underestimate the importance of manual labor, which still plays a major role in our society and our economy. but if you took out the brains running power plants, controlling air traffic, maintaining hospitals, and running businesses large and small, i think you'd notice a pretty drastic change as well. my point is that we cannot survive in our current way of life without major contributions from both manual labor and "brain" labor.

i think you may be mis-quoting johnny. he didn't said women avoid jobs that involve "brain" labor. i understood him to mean that women avoid jobs that involve analytical thought vs. other jobs. a perfect example would be marketing vs. engineering. which field would you guess attracts more women?
nurtur vs. nature?
anyhoo...i don't think he's saying women are dumb and can't think. maybe he is.

This could very well be the most asinine thread ever.
If all men fell of the face of the Earth there would be a substantial amount of lost knowledge. However, if it were to happen gradually than that knowledge would be passed on. Things would be different - no more football and every channel would be lifetime :puke: but society would still function and probably thrive.
As for the fact that most manual labor is done by men...That is first and foremost proof that women are indeed clever. And in the end they would find a way to get it done.

I worked in the engineering profession and as a buyer for a total of 35 years. I contacted numerous sales people during this period. When I called various companies and a woman sales rep answered the phone, I would ask the most basic elementary technical question about their product. 99% of the time they would refer me to Mister So and So. During that period, I probably knew of 10 or fewer women who I could discuss the ins and outs of their product.
In addition, many of the women buyers who I worked with were the same way.
I took an AutoCad course last winter. There was a 30-something woman who gave up after three weeks.
There may be some women who excel in the technical field, but they are far and few between.
A lot of you guys are young and have bought into the "All sexes are equal" concept. You will find through your careers that a lot of men will gravitate toward analytical challenging technical endeavours, while women will gravitate toward repetitious or people oriented tasks, even within the profession which they have chosen.
Look at the Hardware Forum at GotApex. How many females go there?
And how many females work on their car?
I could go and on and cite specific instances but it would fill a book.
