S: Dog to sleep

We put our dog to sleep tonite. Hokie was a 10 year old lab. I can't believe how painful this is. He was my first pet so I guess I never thought about losing an animal before... feel much the same as when anyother family member goes.

:( I'm sorry. It is really hard to lose a pet. Especially after being with them for that long. Just remember all of the good times that you had.

Im sorry that you had to put your pup down. Was it just old age or some other reason?

A few years ago we had to put down our 15 year old cocker spaniel and it was one of the worst feelings I ever had. It felt like I walked or rather carried him in to be killed. I refuse to this day to drive by that vets office. But the only thing which made it better was the fact that I knew he wasnt hurting anymore. He had gotten to the point where it hurt him to move and he was becoming incontinent. I still carry a picture of him around in my wallet to this day and probably will never take it out.

Either way, its too bad, but I'm sure that no matter what it was in the best interest of your dog and you did it because you loved him to much to see him suffer.

last night my sister in law told me they have to put down their 11 year old golden-(cancer)..I felt so bad-our dogs played together since the time they were puppies..I cried.

When the day comes for my doggy I will be just as heartbroken. :(
I think we get to see our pets in the afterlife, and they will be young, free of pain, and greet us with a big doggy lick on the cheek. :)

Thanks for the kind words all. Hokie had a large tumor on his spleen that we didn't know about and it burst and he bled internally.

nickelback, I never really thought of an afterlife for pets but your post made me smile and I'm feeling pretty miserable right now so thanks :)

You did the best you could for him then. I have had many dogs in my lifetime and my brother and I were there when our Chocolate Lab had to be put down because he couldn't get up anymore and was in constant pain (he would cry out if you tried to pick him up). That was the hardest thing my brother and I have had to do - my parents couldn't do it because they loved him as much as we did.

The lives of people and dogs are so intertwined it is very hard when we lose them. I wish you the best and hope you feel better soon. If you are going to get a new dog in the future, be sure to give yourself some time first so that you can bond well with your new pup.

cracker, read the book What Dreams May Come (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0812570944/104-8125595-7759959?v=glance) if you have the chance. It was made into a movie too, starring Robin Williams. It is kinda sad 'cause he loses his wife and tries to find her in the afterworld, but also he gets to see the family pet who had also passed. I really liked that part. :)

Sorry to hear about that, I haven't lost a pet yet, but I know it is coming, we got a blind 13yr old cat. All it does is walks in circles meows at you when it gets lost, walks into things, and then sleeps in front of the fireplace all day.
