View Full Version : So, yesterday morning the phone rang
chrissy

It was just after 7 in the morning.
No info on CID but I answer anyway, I mean it's 7AM telemarketers don't wake up that early :)
So, this is where it gets weird. A guy is on the other end, says hello to me, uses my "birth" name, asks how I am. I ask who he is and he refuses to answer, " you don't know who this is?"
I am terrible at that, names, voices, faces and to boot, I have no memory right now.
He knows my name! WTF?? who is it? So I keep trying to figure it out. He asks if he woke me up, I tell him no -- I have 2 kids to get to school. He asks if I am drinking my coffee -- my inner alarm goes off-- I don't drink coffee, most of my friends know this.
He asks again if he woke me, I tell him no and ask again for him to give up a name. He goes into a masquerade ball thing -- "I guess you don't like them, you want to unveil before the excitement happens," he says.
Okay, I am freaked.
At that point he starts talking, about how he was disapointed about not being able to wake me up, how he loves hearing a woman streach when they first wake up in bed. How he likes to kiss on them and touch...
At that point I hung up. I freaked. I mean, I don't give my number out to anyone and as far as I know, I am unlisted (have been since I moved here). But still, if it is (I haven't checked the new book...) it should be in Donnie's name.
I call donnie at work, he comes home and after the kids get on the bus, I go to work with him for the day. I mean, if some weirdo can have my name and number, he could have the addy to go with it and what am I going to do to defend myself when I can't see my feet???
Yesterday, sucked.

yikes!!!
I'm sure that the phone company has a call tracer service. Find out how to get it working and have it in case the freak calls back.
Hope you stay safe.

LOL Very weird! :(
Definitely change the number (after giving it to me! :) ). Let us know what happens!

Ok, maybe I missed this in another thread, but why can't you see your feet?
Also, like someone else says you can call the phone company. For some reason I seem to remember that you need to get three calls before they'll do anything, though.

That's freaky. If you find out who it is just let us know, we'll give him some back alley justice .

How strange to find a topic already started...
Last night I got a threatening call from who I think was a student from one of my classes (I'm a teacher...8th grade). I don't have caller ID, but I *69ed it and got the "this is a private number" gig.
BTW, the phone company told me to call and file a police report and to dial *57 when the caller in question was the last one to call in. That starts a phone company trace, but only after you do it 3 times =(.
Now, this particular student made mention of the class period he's in, and of course I printed a listing of the class and phone numbers. After entering them into google to see which came up with directory info, I managed to narrow the field to 2 students. (assuming he wasn't lying about the class period, but he made a special call just to tell me that...)
My question is this: is there a way to tell if someone has his/her number blocked from displaying caller id info without having them call me? and without me having caller id?
Any suggestions would be excellent!
TIA

eek. hopefully nothing comes of it, chrissy!
but you should be scared. file a police report. this is probably someone you knew in high school or so... anytime before you got married. was there a creepy co-worker? it may be someone who you've never spoken to before, someone who stared at teh back of your head every day in class or in teh office...
anyway, the reference to "the excitement is about to begin" is bad, bad, bad. please be ridiculously careful!!! borrow a rottweiler, or something, and if you don't want guns, get mace. lots of it. tasers are cool, too.
and sinjinx... hopefully it's just someone running his mouth, as 8th graders tend to do. i don't know of anything more you can do, but when you file a police report, ask them. if the first cop you talk to isn't helpful, try someone else... some cops suck, but there are some that will help you.

I'm a guy so this is not scarry when it happens to me. But it does happen, rarely. The conversations go like this.
*Ring**Ring*
Me: Hello?
Caller: Hi, how are you?
Me: Who is this?
Caller: Can't you recognise my voice?
Me: Who is it?
Caller: Guess
Me: *Click*
*Ring**Ring*
Me: Hello?
Caller: Why did you hang up on me?
Me: *Click*
*Ring**Ring*
Me: Hello?
Caller: Why do you keep hanging up on me?
Me: *Click*
This continues until they stop calling or identify themselves immediately. My friends don't play that game with me now for some reason. A friend will get over being hung up on. They shouldn't be griefing you anyway. A crank caller will give up and be frustrated. They will feel weak and innefective, the same thing they were trying to do to you.
Never ever guess names when someone tells you to "Guess" on the phone. You're telling them the names of your friends and who their voice sounds like!!! What happens a month later when you get a call at 3 in the morning and you here "Hey, it's Stevie. My car's broken down in the middle of nowhere and my phone battery's dying. I'm <gives location> can you pick me up? I think my phone is about to cut out. I can't hear you....".
Do you remember the crank caller? Do you go rescue your "friend" in the middle of nowhere.
Even if you think you recognise the voice, just hang up if you don't know for sure who it is.

Grimm, that was my first instinct! I really don't know why I stayed on as long as I did.
No one at work has my number except David (and when he calls I know it's him from CID and he identifies himself because I did hang up on him the first time he called and tried to play a guessing game) and no one there knows me by anything other than Chris. As for people from school, no one I went to school with I talk to. No one knows my married name to get a number. If it was one of the guys Donnie works with, they would have fessed up by now - I doubt it was one of them, that would be too much to risk in the military (that kinda prank).
Mom thought about my ex -- but I know his voice too well. And I doubt he would have anyone do something like that.
I am just not going to answer the phone if I don't know the info on CID and let the answering machine screen the calls for me.
It's a weird thing. I normally think of myself a level headed and smart when it comes to reacting -- I teach it to my kids and other girls in scouts. But yesterday, I was off guard. Had the house going in prep for getting them off to school, trying to get my other things done, and the phone rings. And I have recieved prank calls before and they never shook me. I need even headed hormones back soon. But that is a different topic.

Why do you think the loser calls at 7am? He gets people off guard.

I would file a police report. If it happens again write down the time and then the police can pull your phone records to get the stalker's number and then go have a "visit" with him.

it is probably a harmless (harmless meaning someone who will not attempt physical contact) loser, BUT... just the fact that he knows your maiden name and made a reference to something exciting happening soon... i wouldn't dismiss it.

We finalized our divorce in 1999. But custody is something he doesn't put to rest easily. He has taken me back to court recently (last fall) and it's still going on... I have won the small battle (or large, depending on how you look at it), he wanted it moved up to the Union City, CA area and I got it moved here to Las Vegas. He wasn't happy, but that was November. He is now regrouping with a new lawyer here and we haven't heard anything since then.
Mike (ex) would call CPS, he would not bring the kids back home, but I can't see him putting someone up to calling me like that. If it was to be traced back to him, it would really screw his slim chance of getting the kids.

sounds like he's not nuts, just pissed, so it's probly not him... we (or, ummm, I, i guess :P ) should probably quit obsessing over it for you ;) of all the annoying people in the world, very few are truly dangerous, so good luck with everything... and definitely file a police report. i think if you can convince them that the guy threatened you, they will trace the call (i don't know that for sure, but i would assume its possible.)

Chrissy, I know this may sound a little over the top, but there is another thing you should remember about dealing with stalkers:
When in doubt, empty the magazine.

Girl: Oh, yeah! Much better

damn chrissy, that is bizarre. don't feel bad about being upset over it -- it's good to be level-headed, but there are some things that are just creepy and this definitely falls into that category. just let the police know and try to keep someone around....like welfare said, nuts like this don't usually aren't the type to initiate physical contact, but you can't be too careful.

i'm not sure, but if you do *68 before you dial a number, then won't that block *69 from calling you back? point being that if this student (who obviously is on his way to an awesome grade in your class) used *68 before dialing your number, it wouldn't have to be an unlisted number for you to be unable to get the number using *69
