View Full Version : CPU is at 100% with nothing running!
Possible explanations:
- Overheating?
- A software problem?
Any ideas? It's an Athlon T-Bird 1.33GHz, and it's my roommie's computer, so I'm not really sure about the motherboard model, etc. Will one of those temp monitoring programs work universally (for all motherboards)? I have one for my Asus board, but we're not really sure what to do... it's running slow as crap
TIA!

There is no network activity. We shut down all applications, and the processes look pretty normal (max taking ~ 3 MB RAM, but still might take up CPU cycles).
I think spyware's out of the question for now, hmm :hmm:

Boot it to safe mode. If the processor still stays maxed, I'd say it's probably hardware. If it goes back down, I'd check the registry.
Check these two keys:
Local_machine>software>microsoft>windows>current version>run
Local_machine>software>microsoft>windows>current version>run services
See if windows is starting anything funny.

It worked! Safe mode was fine, so I removed a suspicious key, now it's running better.
Thanks :)

was it svchost.exe?
Sounds like spyware to me.
Install Adaware and/or Spybot on your buddies computer. That should prevent 99% of that stuff from happening in the future

My CPU's always at 100% because of a CPU cooling program.

You can also check the Indexing Service which will typically run when your machine is idle. It builds an index that windows uses when you do text searches.

I was trying to talk her into getting a Dell PowerEdge 400SC or a custom 2500+ Barton and some other upgrades.

She's an engineer, so she's not afraid to dig in (once she learns the ropes) :) Roomie love over here, haha... I honestly spoil these girls...
