Do you mean a stand-alone walkman style, or an in-dash MP3CD?

If you are looking for a good in-dash unit, the JVC x80 series is great. I own the 680, got it from Overstock.com for $180 a year and a half ago. Another step up would be any Kenwood MP3CD that also supports WMA.

I'm not into the car stereo genre at all. Is Alpine still considered a good brand of after market stereo?

If you're looking for a portable... I have a Sony that I'm happy with. It spins up... loads the song into memory and then spins down. The song plays from memory (very little battery use) without the disc having to spin.

Don't know if all the MP3/CD players do this... but this one does... and it's a nice feature.

Eclipse owns everyone in car audio. Well, alpine is quite close - but it's still too "mainstream" to me. Get an eclipse mp3/cd head unit, or if you're tlaking portable get an iRiver.

I have a Rio Volt MP3/CD player. I don't think they make them any more. You might have to get one used, or see if someone has the last of them. I have the Rio Volt SP250. It's cool it has electronic shock protection up to 8 minutes for MP3 and upgradable firmware. It also has rechargeable batteries.

This is the SP 350. It is the newer one than mine. Amazon still has them in stock. I heard it's not as good as the SP 250, but it is supposed to have beeter features than mine.

I read somewhere that iriver = rio, but not sure, maybe they meant on a quality standpoint.

I believe the iRiver IMP-250 is very similar to the Rio SP250 -- but after that, the lines deviated (The iRiver SlimX IMP-350 doesn't even have an LCD display on the player itself -- it's on the inline remote.

I've seen the Sony that I'm talking about for as little as $60 at Fry's (without the car kit). It only uses two AA batteries.

But... it may not support all those other formats... it's fine for me, though. I only really deal with MP3s.
