the title of supreme dork.

at the age of 27, i am actually going to start PLAYING D&D again, cuz i have four other people here who are up for it. heh. been some rule changes in the last 7 years, so i just ran out and got a copy of the player's handbook ver 3.5...

i am always a half-elven mage, and always totally kick-ass :D

uh. i think you've pretty much been the reigning dork around here for a while. whitak has given you a run for your money but it's still always been you.

Who'd the DM? I was almost always DM when I played, cause I was the only one of our group who had his **** together and could navigate all the number and tables correctly and quickly.

When I did get to play, it was almost always some off the wall character, like a thief who happened to be a were-tiger, or a gnome illusionist named "LSD" :D

gnome illusionist... heh. i was almost always the dm, probly 90% of the time, cuz i'm good at it. i will be a player this time, since i'm not at all up-to-date. i haven't met the dm yet, but i know the other three dudes.

one of them was recently complaining about not having a gf. i just emailed him to point out that a sausage-fest d&d dorkathon on saturday night could be a contributing factor... that along with his only other hobby being martial arts (where, in all fairness, he did pick up his last gf...)

but yeah. three dudes who spend 100 hours a week getting md/phd combined degrees had best put a bit more thought into their hobbies if they want them to yield girlfriends :P

I like magic (the gathering) (pushes glasses up) Battletech was badass back in the day, but now they screwed it all up. Tried to Warhammer 40k it a bit and it didn't work.

Mmmm, hell. I'm jealous.

I used to play in college with a group of friends. Had a good group of people who knew how to role-play. And a dedicated DM who was great at rolling with the crap we threw at him. We always managed to do things in the most unorthodox way possible.

I used to alternate between a Cavalier (a character class from Unearthed Arcana) or a Ranger. Never managed to keep a mage alive very long.

I'd play again in a heartbeat if I knew people who would be any good at it. Not many people get the hang of role-playing. It's like acting, I guess. You get it, or you don't.

PC games are getting pretty good, but they'll never match the creativity and immersion of pencil and paper games. Imagination is better entertainment than anything you can find on a CDrom.

Fond memories... :)

Have you ever tried Megamek? Its basically Battletech except in online java format. There are lvl1 and lvl2 servers, with a large number of players.

My friend from HS and I still manage to get a good game in once in a while. He was visiting for a coupla days and I managed to pound his arse after playing a few hundred Megamek games.

Once you really start playing a lot of other people you learn rather quickly what you should and should not play with. Assault jumpers are BV hogs. lvl1+2 mix is nice, good balanced fire support + brawlers are impossible to beat.

My fav lance on lvl2 was my 2xNightGyr-A (UAC20 version) + KGC-005 (2xLB20x) + a Warhawk-C...ahhh, the memories.

try rifts... Tried it. I played for a few hours at a gaming convention.

(Yes, I have been to conventions devoted to Role Playing Games. Drove from New Orleans to Biloxi to make it, no less, and even stayed at a hotel for the weekend. You may now all bow to your Supreme High Dork Commander. :amidala: :bandit: :amidala: )

That being said, it seemed very high powered and complicated. I doubt I gained much from the experience, since the character was prerolled and I only played, like I said, for 2 or 3 hours tops.

Now Call of Cthulhu, that was a great little game to break from a D+D campaign with.

Damn, I thought I had a couple of dorky traits (computers, photography) but I can't hold a candle to you role-playing gamers here.

I am in awe of the dorkiness within this community!
