"Veggieville"?! PETA might have actually won if they weren't a bunch of condescending $%@!heads. Change you name and we'll give you 20k in veggie burgers?!

Slaughterville, Oklahoma, keeps name, votes down "Veggieville" idea
(Slaughterville, Oklahoma) Feb. 18, 2004 - The town of Slaughterville, Oklahoma, has rejected the idea of changing its name. An animal rights group had suggested Slaughterville become "Veggieville."
The mayor already said the idea of changing the name was "ludicrous," and the "no" vote came in spite of a generous veggie burger offer by the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
The group said they would give $20,000 worth of veggie burgers to the local school if they would just change the town's name.
PETA thought Slaughterville reminded folks of animals dying violently.
But, the town voted to continue to be named after the man who ran a grocery store there 100 years ago, James Slaughter.
There have been a lot of famous Slaughters in our time.
Sargeant Slaughter, for one

there was this poster on the metro the other day quoting the PETA president saying that even if animal testing brought about a cure for AIDS, they'd be against it...
EDIT: ah F*CK...should have read down in the thread list...
PETA has serious problems...they suck :)

Now PETA members could down those $20K veggie burgers.
Why does anybody want to eat veggie burgers anyway? If you want to be a veggie, eat it like it's not pretending that it's something else.

haha so true, I would of love to see all these damn vegetarians back in the tribal days. Hey look we haven't had a real meal in a week, but look over there, its a deer. Nah lets not kill it, we need to let the nice little deer live...

They were a lot easier to catch, since there were no domesticated walking slabs of beef to be found anywhere back in those days.

That's a nice romanticised vision of tribal living you got there. In reality, it varied greatly from tribe to tribe what their diet was. Some were mostly agrarian (like the Hopi and Navajo of the southwest), others were mostly crustacean/shellfish/fish (including seals and whales in the Pacific Northwest), and others relied on venison or buffalo for their caloric intake especially to get them through the winter when there were no fruits, buts or berries in abundance. Mainly the Indian diet was a varied one with a good mix of both groups. They did not domesticate animals for food. The abundance of wild game likely made it unnecessary. The only domesticated animal in North America, the dog, was, however, used for food on some ceremonial occasions. There were even two tribes in North America that were canibalistic, but they "died out" you could say.

When I heard the term "tribal," I was thinking back a little farther, like in caveman days. While we think of Native Americans as being divided into "tribes," that term is really more a sign of our own prejudice and condescension toward the Native's customs and lifestyle than an accurate depiction of their organizational structure. They were more advanced socially than the term gives them credit for, and not nearly as nomadic as often depicted (until we started driving them out to the far reaches of the western US, of course).

you may be missing the point...most of the vegans, vegetarains, people who try not to eat meat at every meal, etc that i know aren't really opposed to killing animals. we are opposed to the cruelty that occurs on factory farms.
