Hi,
My AMD 2500+ is running pretty hot on stock heatsink. Should I:

1. Get a whole new heat sink and use thermal paste
2. Remove stock heat sink, scrape the thermal tape off, and replace with thermal paste.

I don't know, but the stock heat sink looks like aluminum, and the heat sinks I for sale online don't seem all that much more special than the stock HS. I think thermal paste would help out a lot more than new heatsink. Maybe something like the fancy artic sliver.

How hot, exactly, is your chip running? It might just seem like a rather high number, but not be all that bad. If it is hot, I would recommend making sure you have proper air flow, into and out of, your case. Also, does your heatsink have a fan on it or just an intake fan blowing on it?
Thermal paste might help you out a bit, just make sure not to overapply it, because then it is counterproductive.

If your CPU is running under 50C full load, don't worry about it.

Oh right. I forgot to mention that. It's running 46 idle. I have plenty of air flow I'm sure. I have 1 case fan exhaust. I have 2 intake fans, one on front and one on side.

I think it's the heat sink's just not very conductive. Do you guys know how much difference tape and paste makes?

Thanks,
Eric

You should use one intake and two exhaust fans.

:stupid:

I have crappy air flow on my 1700+ and I run ~56C I have two intakes and 3 exhausts (not counting the standard 1 on the PS)

with my 1600+ and good air flow i was running about 55C...i have a 2600+ right now running ~45C so your temp range doesn't seem to out there...

i always thought the earlier versions of the + chips ran hot...but i guess it's normal

46 idle isn't too bad at all. especially if you system is running stable, I wouldn't worry about it.

When I first got my puter, I can run idle at 36C. I'm not sure why it's running like 10 degrees hotter now. I really want to try some thermal paste to see if it makes any difference.

Thermal paste may reduce it a couple of degrees. Also lapping (making the heatsink smooth by sanding with 300 grit sandpaper) may take another degree off. Out of curiousity, is your cpu a 266 or 333 bus. If it's 266 than you temp is normal for that cpu.

I think thermal paste voids AMD's warrenty. Use with caution.
