Hi all,
I want to remove my current heatsink and put in another one. Actually, the same one, but I want to scrape the thermal tape off and apply thermal paste.

My question is, do I have to remove the motherboard from the case or can I just install the heat sink on as it is? I'm afraid downward pressure would break the places where the MB is sittin on top of the standoffs.

I agree.

I've taken off and put on my heatsink about 5 times without any problem.

You don't have to remove the MB for HSF installation.

I'm sure you were kidding about the "Scrape" the thermal tape off. I hope. I have images in my mind about you taking a bowie knife to the heatsink. Be sure and clean the h/s with Isoprophyl alcohol and not a meat cleaver.

LOL.. yeah save the meat cleaver for if you screw it up and it's hopeless.. then you can just chop that mobo to pieces. :D

Actually, I have read that Goof-Off (or next would be acetone) is much better for cleaning off a heat sink, followed by a cleaning with 90% isoprophyl.

That may well be, but the point I was subtly trying to get across was not to "Scrape" the heatsink base, and especially not the cpu. :)
