View Full Version : Dell's Video Card Selection Question
03-07-2004, 06:56 AM
I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer an opinion on video cards that are available for the Dell 8300. My purpose for my computer includes video editing home movies, some gaming that really aren't too 3D graphics intensive, and maybe some analog to digital conversion of some old VHS tapes (does that even matter with the graphics card?). If you had the choice between the All-in-Wonder Pro 64MB, 128MB ATI Radeon 9600, or 128MB GeoForce 5200 FX and you wanted to save money, which would you choose under the stated intent of use and why? How good would the transfer be from VHS or Laserdisc through the All-in-Wonder Pro? Thanks in advance for any help on these questions.

I have two AIW's and have used them for analog-digital. The quality is passable, but not extraordinarily good. My advice; if you have the means, copy your analog sources to a firewire-capable digital video camera first, then process from the digital video camera.

I would get the R9600 and an PCI TV tuner so you could transfer video.

Thanks for the input. Seems that the AIW Pro doesn't offer much over a spearate graphics card and PCI capture card (aside from being all-in-one) What does the ATI Radeon offer over the Geoforce FX aside from speed? There is no doubt in my mind that the ATI Radeon is the better card. Since I don't have much in the way of graphics intensive programs, will the ATI Radeon be right for me at $140 more or would I be purchasing more than I need?
