This is pretty impresive.

Basically the drive will write to a silk screen portion on the top of the disk. The same laser that wrote the disk willetch the silkscreen to make a label.

I wonder if they could do a red green and blue layered disk or a CMYK layers. With multiple layers, you can create an image that is full color depending on the # of layers removed.

HP estimates that a drive that uses LightScribe will carry a premium of about $10 over the going price today, and that a disc will cost about a dime more than today's discs.
I would pay that for labeling. :thumb:

If you buy a CD from half.com, you won't have any idea if it's an original or a copy.

Dude, if you tell everyone our ideas, we'll never make money!

that yamaha tatoo thing was novel, but yeah, since it only wrote on the underside, it was kinda pointless. this is cool stuff. :)

You can usually tell if a disc is burned or an original stamped copy by looking at the writable side.

Dang, it warms my heart to see that there are still some quality innovations coming off the assembly line. THIS is a great idea. Hopefully some day soon I'll be able to throw away all of those Sharpies I have in my drawer.

i got one of these and its very cool. works like they say. the print time is kinda slow, but it can reprint a label over and over and be on the same EXACT position as the previous. It does this with a set of tracking marks located in the center of teh disk.

Supposedly there are rumors of color capable disks, and faster writing disks. Each disk in its highest quality is about 30 minutes for full coverage. This should be cut dramatically by using teh new disks. The drives are suppsoed to be capable of using the new disks once they are in production.

DVD media costs about $1 each while 30 CD-R's run about 20.

the HP drives are the same as the BenQ drives, which are super cheap at newegg in the OEM version.

Other than it being a writable CD you mean, instead of the stamped ones that are mass manufactured?
