IT's hard to tell the whole story from just over a minute of video. If their mission was to go out an discourage looting then they did it, atleast to these guys. These things happen when put in that kind of situation. All I can say is that it's too little to judge from.

That said, Go ARMY and Go Old Ironsides (my old unit).

A little demonstration of abuse of power. Stealing wood? I agree the video's a little too short but i mean, crushing a car over wood for crying out loud.

Nice firm way to get the message to not steal across. Needs to be done here to thieves.

that's what you get when a generation of kids who grew up watching Jackass joins the army.

I also agree that the video is very short and odes not give the full story. We cannot even guarentee that the narrorator is not full of meecrob.

Bwwahahahaha

That said, before we got there, stealing may have cost you a hand or two. Maybe losing the car isn't so bad.

Okay, here's what I'm having trouble understanding. Everyone is saying that the video is too short and you can't really tell what prompted the soldiers to do what they did.

Now, I can think of about 20 reasons why these Iraqi guys would be justified in stealing some wood, but I can't think of any to justify what those soldiers did. Especially considering they couldn't understand what the Iraqis were telling them.

What if they were trying to explain that an American bomb had damaged his family's home and they needed the wood to make repairs? Or that by selling the wood they could get enough money to feed their children?

Or maybe they were just going to sell it to buy some smack. My point is, those soldiers had no way of knowing what the Iraqis motives were.

As I understand it, we're trying to convince these people that an American style democracy is good for them. When we have guys like this out there acting as both judge and jury, when they don't even speak the same language as these people. This is how resentment and animosity breed.

For all we know these guys went home, told their neighbors and friends what happened, and convinced someone there that a road side bomb was a reasonable retaliation.

I know that sounds extreme, but thnk about it, what if that had been your car? Wouldn't you be pissed? Wouldn't you want to get back at these guys?

Ok, I found this link that I assume is the same video because the link above isn't working.

It sucks that he lost his taxi, but it sucks more that he was stealing wood (I'm going to try not to laugh about a man stealing wood).
I say that we leave the Army to be the Army. Don't expect them to be any less for the sake of being cops. I need to show that video to my friend, he'd love it since he used to be part of the 3rd ID.

They may have handled it wrong, but there are ALWAYS harsh punishments for looting... that's one of the biggest things they're enforcing over there.

Take a look at this memo (http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGMDE140852003?open&of=ENG-USA) from Amnesty International - they blast the US forces for not taking enough measures to stop the looting. Guess this is in response to that.

i believe Jeffbx is referring to this part

Amnesty International calls on the occupying forces to:
- take urgent measures to enforce law and order in areas under their control, specifically by preventing acts of pillage, destruction and violence to people;
- ensure the provision of food, water and medical supplies to people living in areas under their control;
- maintain medical and hospital services, public health and hygiene.
