I have an older ATI video capture card which works great. I use ATI software which has a number of picture quality settings.

I generally use "Good" which translates to about 7 MB per minute or 400-420 MB per hour which will fit on to a CD (VCD). However, the picture will look "blocky" with certain videos.(I am pumping analog video from a laser disk player to the card}.

With the best resolution, the usage is 32 MB per minute,or 4.5 times the "Good" quality. Therefore, one hour of video will not fit on to a CD or even two CDs.

Are there any other programs which have additional settings? Right now, there are no settings in between "Good" and "Best".

PowerVCR lets you create you own settings.

Thanks, bachviet. I have that and I will try it.

Something very unusual: I use Nero to burn to VCD> even though both avi files are greatly different in size, the final VCD file for both are each 35.2 MB. The original excellent quality avi file is better, though but definitely not 4 times better.

or after you grab it, you can convert it to divx to save on space.

VCDs are always the same resolution. Nero converts the video into the vcd format which is about 10MB/Min with a 320x240 res and can fit 80 minutes onto a 700MB disc.

If I want to convert an avi file to VCD I would use TMPGEnc to do the converting and them use nero to burn. TMPGEnc converts the file much quicker than Nero, but is an extra step.

Ok, I downloaded TMPGEnc . Since you stated that VCD has the same resolution no matter what the original avi file looks like, I decided to convert to SVCD. Nero wouldn't let me perform the operation, since I don't have the plug-in.

So I used ULead Movie Factory. It took ten minutes to conert a 3-1/2 minute file. The results are a lot better and the file size is 47 MB. I am extremely satsified, except for the processing time.

Thanks.
