Tips for a noob:
If you are transplanting make sure the soil is nice and airy. Air is more important than water right now.
If your plant is a potted plant, most people will over water it. I like to change things up a bit watering more some times and less others (just like nature does). I go out there to water about every other day unless I'm busy and then I can neglect it for up to 5 days at a time if it's not too hot outside. It's hard to pin this down. There are some plants that no matter how much you water, it's not going to be over watered.
Plants are pretty picky sunwise. You might have to experiment if the sun exposure isn't listed. You need a bit more water for sunny plants. Usually more sun is better than none but I killed a mini palm once with too much sun. I'm thinking: Beach, warm, hot, dry... but for some reason the mini palms are low light.
If the tips of your leaves are dying it's a sign you might need a bigger pot.
If a plant is in a pot, you can tell how much water it has by lifting it. If it weighs very little, you need to water it more often.
I might be able to come up with some more tips

I have a ton of plants, my girlfriend got mad at me because I planted a ton of hot pepper plants then forgot to take care of them and she had to... but now I am watering every day the veggies and every other day everything else unless it gets hot like it does in the OC every so often
I have tulips, roses and apple, pear, and plum trees outside. Inside I have a spider plant that is half dead, and a something-or-other that my mother-in-law gave me that is overtaking my living room. I also usually plant some pumpkins and zuchinni. I want to grow some asparagus, but I'm not sure how to do it.

I have a little pot with some bamboo growing in it. I give it some water once every other week or so. I put it by the window every other week or so. Sometimes I clip the dead leaf stuff. Thats about all i have to say about my plant.

Tomatoes, Garlic, peppers (assorted), cabbage, brussel sprouts, peas, green beans, basil, oregano, thyme, spanish lavender, lemon balm, dill, cukes, scallions, strawberries, blueberries, black berries, raspberries, peaches, GRAPES (concord and white seedless), apricots, pears, purple plums, cortland and macintosh apples, roses, daffodils, crocus's, impatiens, and various other outdoor plants....and houseplants-my most favorite of all is a christmas cactus that was started as slip off my grandmother's plant about 30 years ago-it's only flowered within the past 9 years-never before..I have dracena, spider plants, ivy, ferns and a ficus that is getting to big for the sunroom-key to growing plants-DON'T OVER WATER!!!!! use a good fertilizer once a month (miracle grow works good) on house plants and once a week on garden and orchard plants..medium sun is always the best (except for christmas cactus, pointsettas, etc...those are sun challenged type plants..good luck..do yourself a favor too-fill an old gallon water jug up with water and let the water sit uncovered overnight before using it-a master gardner told me it eliminates the chlorine from the water. good luck.

I had a little plant, not sure if it is dead yet, is has hung on by the last stem for over 2 years now. The best is lucky bamboo :) you don't have to water it for a month, and it can go awhile without water if you don't water it :)
I don't think I will be able to kill the bamboo

I dumped out all the water in my little pot cuz I was worried about stuff growing in it. The water didnt smell in the pot but i dumped it in the sink, ewww. Is this normal. Do I need to add anything to it. Its basically a little pot with rocks and some bamboo growing in the middle..
