AOL sucks. you all know this. i know this as well.

but, if my calculations are correct, by signing up for a 45 day trial of AOL for broadband, i can access all the NCAA tournament games not being broadcast on TV (most importantly, those involving MSU) without paying the $10 charge that i would have to pay otherwise. (yes, i know, $10 isn't much, but i'm a poor student. if i can get something for free instead of paying $10, i'm all over that.)

so anyway, i installed AOL. i only have 128k of RAM on this computer, and AOL is sucking up practically all of it (ok, around 60%, if you want to be exact). but by the time you add in all of windows other processes, i have like 20k of free memory :(

so just another reminder that AOL sucks.

What kind of comp is that? I might have some extra RAM lying around for it.

I thought AOL was offering a stripped down version of their service and software? Maybe not, but might be worth looking into if you can get free service for a month or something

Why do people keep their AOL? There are better dialups for half the price, and DSL for $11 more.

I don't understand it.

For starters... most folks are "too lazy" to research alternatives.

Second, AOL gets the n00bies hooked... and pretty much brainwashes them that AOL IS the "internet" (nothing else exists outside of the AOL framework for internet.)

Third, once AOL has its hooks in you and you have publicized your e-mail to EVERYBODY and that's the address associated to YOU, well... folks don't wanna give up that identity. I know it took a few years for me to shed the evil that is AOL, which is why I now primarily use Hotmail so that I can be flexible as far as ISPs go without disrupting my e-mail. :thumb:

yeah, my mom's first internet experience was via AOL, and she had it for about 10 years. then, heaven forbid, her children decided to upgrade her to DSL as a christmas gift, and now all i hear is complaints about how much better AOL was.

"oh, this DSL takes more work then AOL! with AOL i just logged in, and now i have to open up this little E icon, and type in my URL before anything happens!"

"... but mom, now it loads like, 100% faster, and it's less clicks! you don't even have to type in a pw!"

"and then with AOL i just click the icon for my mail, and there it is! now i have to login and do all this stuff"

"... but mom, i have it setup so you just click the Outlook button! all the stuff you did with AOL, you can do here!"

and so on... i finally just told her if she hates DSL so much, fine, go back to AOL, and we'll terminate the contract early. :banghead:

Yeah, my 'rents were on AOL for about 6 years before I convinced them to get a cable modem. Actually, it was my father who inquired about faster internet access because he got fed up with the slowness of AOL when he was doing work-related things.

So, I helped my parents save their address book and then we got the Cable modem hooked up and I showed my parents the joys of Yahoo Mail and Hotmail. My father liked Yahoo and my mother sticks to Hotmail. I suggested they use a Comcast email address through Outlook, but they didn't want all the bells and whistles that came with the program. Furthermore, since they both travel a lot, they can access their email accounts from anywhere in the world and not have to worry about whether or not a message is still on the server.

At first they hated the idea of re-entering their address books etc, but now they love the faster internet access. My mom sends millions of digital photos. Before it would take 10 minutes to send 1 file. Now she says it takes a few seconds. My father, well, he's just happy he can go read the news without AOL giving him the message "your session has been logged off due to inactivity. please log back in"

it's an intel ca810e mobo....takes single or double-sided DIMMs.

right now, i have one 128mb chip in it.

btw, it's got a 733 celeron processor.

yes, i know, nothing amazing. but it does websurfing and word-processing, which is all i really need.

It probably takes PC133 RAM.

I would rather be without internet than install AOHell in my computers. :disa:
