So I guess I shouldn't confirm that I heard *under* Yeah its overkill. :winkie:

However, at 2pm there were a few passes left for an UltraStar bundle: movie, drink, popcorn that have been there for a few days. I came home to get them and they were gone? Did they remove them or were they all purchases? They weren't even on the list at 4pm. Then at 5pm a bunch more things were taken off.

So we have slim pickin's again.

I think that's the problem--they don't spend ANYTHING on prizes. All they do is takes stuff given to them by advertisers and sometimes give it to us and other times use it then give us used stuff.
All the good give-aways are still done by on-air call-ins. And that seems to be true of all the stations.

I disagree.

Last year 101.5 gave away a couple of cars. We had the Super Bowl Football toss, plus another toss for a car, plus they had trips etc. They just can't have something really nice every day/week, so they fill in between the big ones with smaller prizes, some of which they get for free.

I disagree as well, last year KGB gave away $1000 a week, I won one of those weeks . They give away Motorcycles in May, there are alot of prizes, but
There are 2 types of contests on the KGB site, there is the Blue chip and the Clear Channel ones, this includes Boyer gig on Wed. And remember there are quite a few of us playing. Take it for what its worth a free free program with free prizes.

That's crazy advertising every hour for people to join the contest and just tossing them bones like cd's and dvd's maybe once a day.

It's true they have great prizes once in awhile but the chances of getting the great stuff is even lower than being the 10th caller.

Believe me, the odds here on 101.5 are much, much better than those for national sweepstakes.

First, are those prizes ONLY for VIPs or for anyone who calls in?
Second, do you really think they BOUGHT those cars/trips for us? Nope--they were donated by some sponsor. OK, maybe it was in exchange for "free" advertising, but nothing came out of their pockets to give us those prizes.

My Friends daughter just won a raffle from Jack the Romantic weekend in Palm springs, From Fox I get mostly tickets to games (hockey), but I got those last year from KGB, so sponsers change and so do promotions. I play 3 different stations codes and I really don't see a difference in any of them I do think all the prizes have gotten smaller and the price goes up as more people play...

Super bowl toss off , 4 ways to play, call in, trade in points, raffle, drawing at events, I traded my points in, my boyfriend won his from the raffle. we didn't win but it was still fun..

I guess I don't understand why you would expect them to pay for something like a car when they can get it as payment from a local car dealer in exchange for advertising. Seems perfectly logical and right to me.

It certainly doesn't matter to me...in fact, the more of these kinds of barter, the more prizes, the more I like it. :)

It is interesting to note how we consumers view radio vs how the radio station folks do. We are getting a service...music, new, talk, prizes, etc....but the radio station gets no revenue from us. The classic text book definition of radio is that it is an advertising medium. They make all of their money from advertisers who pay them (in cash or goods) for advertising space. The radio stations broadcast music or whatever to get us to listen so they can "guarantee" their advertisers that a certain number of people are listening to their ads.

Interestingly, back in the 60's giving away prizes was not instituted as a means to get or keep listeners. Back before today's sophisticated audience measuring systems, a radio station might offer a prize to guage how many listeners they had during a certain hour. They had some standard number base like 2% of the listeners at any time will respond to a contest. They then would see how many people responded to the contest, multiply it by some factor, and that told them how many listeners they had at that time period. They could compare those numbers to those generated for a similar contest at a different hour of the day, or a different day of the week.

surfer
02-14-2006, 02:33 PM
That's great some people on this board have gotten great stuff from KGB. My point is by hyping up the Blue Chip contest with ads every hour instead of investing in more prizes I'm not getting great stuff. My guess is as more people join everyone will get less stuff. I'll stick around till I'm getting no good stuff.

Back to the discussion:

The radio stations like to have "loyal" listeners so that they can lure advertisers, right? If they set up a program and found that nobody joined, they couldn't use that info to lure in advertisers, but if they get slews of subscribers, they can dangle that in front of an advertiser's face, even if none of those people really listen.

So do they owe us anything? I guess not. Once they get our information, they can use the numbers to draw advertisers. Can we delete our accounts? Don't count on it.

So their incentive with trying to draw in more subscribers is that they can increase their numbers and can also show that there are many "current" members (since a 5-year old account that has had no activity in a year indicates that the person may not be around, and some advertisers may ask for that.)

So how do they draw in new subscribers? Not by asking them to join but by giving them something. <conjecture>Everything they offer to us is really intended to draw in new subscribers, not really to keep us.</conjecture> However, if old members are not happy, they lose a major source of new members: word of mouth.

--
It's obviously a tough balance. If they gave us nothing, we'd all stop using the program. If they gave us all something every time we logged in, would you keep coming back? Almost definitely. Since they can't do that, they need to decide how to keep dangling the carrots in front of us so we THINK we can get something and maybe give us little things like movie passes once in a while.

What bugs me is that when the big prizes come, they totally ignore their loyal listeners and just lay it out there for the world to grab.

Itsme

Back to the discussion:

.....What bugs me is that when the big prizes come, they totally ignore their loyal listeners and just lay it out there for the world to grab.

That's the same problem those of us who enter sweepstakes have with the supermarkets. It used to be that for all the supermarkets in order to enter one of their sweepstakes you had to take the time to send in entries, or put your name in a drop box, etc. So, the people who won things were those who wanted t work for the prize.

Then, the supermarkets put in the loyalty card programs. Now, anyone who buys a specific product, or in some cases doesn't buy the product, but just swipes their card, gets entered into a sweepstakes, even if they didn't know the supermarket was running a prommotion,

I've been on trips I have won and met other winners who said that they had no interest in entering, but won just by swiping their card.

The supermarkets, like other businesses, have resorted to promotion procedures that make it easier for them to manage, even if it doesn't make sense to the person being courted.

I wish I knew exactly what this is "A Family 4-Pack of Tickets for the Grand Canyon Railway" I looked on the website they list and it shows the railway starting out a places in Arizona. I'd really rather not drive to Arizona to take the train. I wish it would start out here in California.

Call the station and ask for the promotions person...ask her what the prize is and how many points it will go for.

When we met her at the Super Bowl Toss she indicated the software program being used for the points is a canned program from Clear Channel HQ and they have no way of having the program list the point value before it becomes available.

So go to Amtrak and find out what the ticket cost from wherever you are is going to cost you. Then, once you figure out that the cost of gas even at $3/gal in your car roundtrip will be less than the A-train ticket :thud: , it won't seem so bad to drive to Williams, AZ!
;)

WRT the cr@ppy prize descriptions...

Call the station and ask for the promotions person...ask her what the prize is and how many points it will go for.

When we met her at the Super Bowl Toss she indicated the software program being used for the points is a canned program from Clear Channel HQ and they have no way of having the program list the point value before it becomes available.

Bzzzt! I call "copout!": as someone else suggested, they could write a better description, including the points cost. Regardless, there are at least 2 other stations using the same turnkey package [channels 93.3 & 105.3] from ObscureChannel Comms, & they can somehow manage to get the points costs into the descriptions...

So, anyway, what did that promotions gal look like? Was she cute? [Just looking for clues why they haven't sacked... er, fired her! :hihi: ]

I think he means that if radio realizes who u are here and sharing, they can look at it as cheating and discontinue u for that reason.

Itsme

Some of the stations really frown on sharing and have cancelled people's accounts when they found it has happened, or even suspected it. This has happened on the KyXy point program, as well as the Couch Potato points program. We know people this has happened to for sure.

We are not sure that the Clear Channel stations feel the same way, so we are all stepping lightly by not using our real names, and not putting anything here that might help anyone in identifying us.

Precisely, it has happened with other non-Clear Channel stations for sure which is why we are all SO careful. It's just a cautionary move if nothing else. We all watch each other's backs here. In general giving away any info that might pinpoint your identity is not the best idea.

Hey Scottmath, don't forget to edit your post title too! : )
