A cheap Axim might be a good idea. They are super fast (I have a 400 mhz) and you can run many cool apps for them. If you have a Mac then forget it you might need to get a Palm instead. The Tungsten series are dope, although I'm not sure if they take Compact Flash.

if you have a mac, there is some software that will allow pocketpc sync, but i never used it, so i dont know what it supports.

Palms are ok, but lately they have been lagging. Pocket PC seems to offer more than a palm offers.

I am partial to my sharp zaurus though. Its a linux based PDA that is ok for PIM type of usage, but it also can run anything from Kismet to an Apache webserver. I saw it at Defcon this past august and was blown away. The only thing that sucks about it is the battery life when using 802.11b.

If you don't like Palm or PocketPC, that limits your choices by about 95%. I'll second ribitch's vote for the Zaurus... my brother has one, and it's quite cool. Seems to support quite a few different devices.

Battery life does suck when using 802.11, but the same is true of just about any PDA.

Dell stopped selling the Axim X5 (the one with the CF slot) a month or two ago, because most of the touchscreens go dead after a year :hmm: Mine's still kicking, but I don't know till when...

Look for a refurbed Toshiba e-series, I think the e740 has built in wifi and CF + SD slots. Best place to browse for it is ebay or www.compgeeks.com (check weekly)

e740's have a super high failure rate, especially the LCD. They are quite a piece of crap.

Are you sure? Looks to me like they're still selling them. Doesn't look like they carry the 300MHz one anymore, but the 400MHz is still listed there.

I'd still recommend the X5... I had great luck with mine until I lost it. I got a Viewsonic V37 as a replacement, which has also been very solid, but it doesn't have a CF slot.

Ahh, you're right. 3-4 weeks ago, they didn't have it listed in neither Home nor SB...that was right about the time my touchscreen started acting up.
