Mob beats truck driver after fatal accident (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-040324mob,1,7498500.story?coll=chi-news-hed)

A 39-year-old Cicero man is hospitalized this morning in serious condition after he was beaten by a mob that pulled him from his truck after he struck and fatally injured a man on Chicago's South Side, authorities said.

Police have one man in custody in connection with the attack and are seeking witnesses to the incident, WGN-Ch. 9 reported. No charges have been filed yet as a result of the beating, and police told WGN no traffic citations are expected against the truck driver.

The 23-year-old fatality, identified as Eddie Boyd by the Cook County medical examiner's office, was crossing 51st Street on the 1500 West block about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by the 18-wheel flatbed trailer truck, police said.

WGN reported the man apparently fell under the rear wheels of the vehicle. He was dragged about 30 yards before the truck stopped at Ashland Avenue, with the victim under the rear wheels.

A crowd estimated at 15 to 20 people attacked the cab, broke the windshield, dragged the driver out and beat him until police arrived. He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was being treated today for facial fractures, WGN reported.

"They thought he was not going to stop," said Joseph Eagle, who identified himself as the victim's uncle. "When he did, they dragged him out of the truck and beat him down."

The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he died, according to Chicago police spokeswoman Alice Casanova.

The incident was reminiscent of a July 30, 2002, accident elsewhere on the South Side, when Jack Moore and Anthony Stuckey were stomped and bludgeoned to death by a crowd after their van slammed into a group of women on a porch. Three women were hurt, and one died of her injuries.

according to WGN, the dude stumbled out into traffic and was possibly drunk. The driver will not be charged with anything. He's got facial fractures. Wonder if there are any racial issues in this case.

That's like saying "I'll never drive in LA" because of the Rodney King incident. This was one event (okay, two) in a specific part of the city. Chicago's a big town.

All that aside, we have a wonderful public transportation system here, so no need to drive. Ever see Risky Business? That's just like my ride home every day. :D

I am glad I am not the only one who thought this.

running over people in other cities is, of course, not a big concern :P

Don't blame all of Chicago for some neighborhood. Some of these neighborhoods are very tough areas, and the residents have this mentality where they protect their own kind (more along geographical lines than racial lines). That and there are plenty of people (not a majority, but a big enough minority to cause problems) that are just looking for an excuse to start something. I've worked at both Sinai and Cook and this is not even close to the worse thing I've ever heard.

i swear ive heard this same thing happen in the south side before. i think it was some guy in a delivery truck hit some girls after he lost control of the truck. if i remember correctly a mob beat him to death. EDIT: didnt RTFA, it happened in 2002 on the south side

like molecularfire said, there are really tough neighborhoods in the south and west sides of the city that arent representative of the whole city. there are places where you could killed for less than that. and i wouldnt think that it would be any different in other inner city areas around the world. i could see the same thing happening in brooklyn, east la, south central, cabrini green, etc.

Thirty yards is ninety feet, which is only 1-1/2 times the length of a typical tactor trailer. I would say he stopped fairly fast..
