It seems like every town I go to there is either a Broad Street or a Main Street and a Central Avenue.

Anyone know the most popular street name in America?

well, according to About.com (http://geography.about.com/library/faq/blqzstreetname.htm) it is ....[drumroll]

Second St!?

********
What is the most common street name in the U.S.?
The most common street name is the United States isn't Main Street - it's actually Second Street! The second most popular street name is Park Street, followed by 3rd, 4th, and 5th Streets.
First Street doesn't even make the top five, it's number six. The second most popular non-numerical street name is Washington Street, which is #9 overall.

That is so true in my city... I wouldn't walk on Martin Luther King Boulevard during the day, much less the night.:johnwoo2:

MLK here in Austin doesn't run through the ghetto. Well part of it might on the other side of the highway but I live a street away from it and it runs through the middle of downtown between the capital and the university.

This is wierd, but I actually know why this is.

Back in the day, when the American industry was built around the railroad, the road that the mills and factories used to take their goods to the railhouse was called "Front" street. If the town grew up around the railroad, "Front" street was first street, and the next street outward from the middle of town was "second" street.

That makes sense. There is a Front street in Philly, but it's next to the river. I believe it's been re-named. And I am pretty sure the next street is called Second street.

Very interesting.

:hmm:

That's like having the smallest available drink size at Burger King be called "Medium".

Maybe someone can verify this...supposedly the reason why there is a MLK boulevard in every SOUTHERN city was due to a federal requirement implemented against former confederate states. Now this doesnt make much sense since the one far proceeds the other, but I guess it could be related. (As in a way of making reparations for the past harms by honoring someone who would have been oppressed.)

Wow I bet Bires has all sorts of random trivia knowledge. I'm impressed. My guess would have been Main Street as well, and I certainly would have thought First Street would be as popular as Second. It seems Third would be equally popular (the assumption being that there are three or more parallel streets), but I guess that's not always the case. Duly impressed by that factoid.

NYC has two 3 broadways; The Broadway, East Broadway, and Broadway in Queens.

well, when i lived in seattle and tacoma, both cities had an impressive MLK blvd...and that is no where near the south....

and now that we're on Broadway...isn't it that all broadway's are where boystown are located...thats the way it is in chicago...

every town has a Main, Market and Broadway, no?

also, every city has a suburb where street names are named after the tree that was cut down in order to put the street there.

You'll become very familiar with "Main Street" once you move to Blacksburg... and btw, you're living in an apartment 2 minutes walking distance away from me

Anyone have streets in there town that are named after the abutting town, and then when crossed into that town from that street, the name of the street changes into the name of the town you just left? Now imagine being new to the area and coming off the interstate right smack in the middle of that...
