So have a pioneer slot load dvd-rom, and one of those free officemax khypermedia 48,24,48 burners. For the longest time, I haven't been able to use the dvd-rom when the burner is plugged in. which means, whenever I want to use the dvd-rom, I have to turn off the computer, unplug powersource from the burner, and turn on the computer and the dvd-rom works fine. But when both are plugged in. The dvd-rom fails to work! WHATS THE FRIGGIN PROBLEM?!?!

How are your IDE devices set up? Which device is on which channel as master and slave?

what happens when both are plugged in? I am guessing there is something wrong with your jumper settings.

That was my first guess, too. Did you remember to set one as slave?

guess I should have gone into more detail,
DVD-ROM is set to Secondary Master...
CD-RW is set to Secondary Slave...
Here are the senarios
Both plugged in - cd-rw works, but dvd-rom does not
cd-rw pluggeg in - cd-rw works
dvd-rom plugged in - dvd-rom works
I remembered to set the drives accordingly to what they are plugged in as...slave and master.
This is a long shot, but you should try it.
Set the jumpers on both drives to "Cable Select"
I've had these problems before, and this has fixed it. :)

Bad news...
I set both to Cable select, and all I see now is the cd-rw
and while someone thinks of a thing for me to do...can someone also explain cable select...I've never really understood what that meant.

GOOD NEWS....
I took the drives off cable select put the CD-RW as MASTER, and the DVD-ROM as SLAVE!
or some damn odd reason, thats works. I wonder why it didn't work when the DVD was master and RW was slave. sometimes, I hate my computer.

means the computer will choose which drive is master or slave (i think)
good thing it's working now...

Cable select uses a special IDE cable. The master drive is on the center connector and the slave drive is on the end connector.
One of my DVD drives couldn't be seen if it was set to master on the secondary channel. If it was set to slave, there was no problem.

Could be that the drive letters were messed up. If you go to Safe Mode, you may have a bunch of CDROMs and CDRWs and DVDs which you have installed in the past.
Delete the ones you no longer use.
I have had this problem. When a burn was ready, nothing happened. The program was looking for a piece of hardware at a specific location, but couldn't find it.
