View Full Version : DVD ROM Can See But Can't Read

I'm wondering if my DVD ROM drive has had it, or if it is a problem that can be fixed. When I stick a CD-R disc in the drive, it can "see" the files, but when I try to access the files, the computer freezes. The sound that comes from the drive appears to be the sound of a drive trying to access the file. I know that it isn't the disc since I am able to access same file on the CD-RW drive on the same computer. What's wrong? Thanks.

Well... it still COULD be the disc... unless you can't access ANY discs in that DVD Rom drive.
Can you read other discs in the DVD Rom drive?
Dave.

I tried other discs and got the same result. It's the drive. I booted in safety mode (Win 98SE) and removed the drive from the computer and had it reinstall the drivers. That didn't work either. I'm wondering if this drive bit the dust.

Yeah, sometimes they just crap-out.
As a last ditch effort, you could try to find a firmware upgrade for the drive (if it's a name-brand drive, it might be easier than if not).
Otherwise, it could be time to pony-up for a new one. Think of it as an excuse to get a DVDRW drive ;)
Dave.
