View Full Version : Do you ever Order Spaghetti at a Restaurant?

It's one of my least favorite meals no matter how it's prepared.

I rank it almost as low as Chicken Croquettes.

They are both very boring entrees.

I wouldnt order it from a restuarant simply because I cannot rationalize paying over $2 for a bowl of spaghetti. I can make my own and have it taste just as good for around 30 cents, so my brain won't let me pay 10 times that in a restaurant.

Sure. It's a rip-off but all food at restaurants are rip-offs. If I feel like eating spaghetti, I'll order spaghetti.
If I feel like eating :spam:, I'll order :spam:

Never. I grew up on the stuff. THE REAL STUFF..the 13 hour sauce, the homemade bread, the handcut spaghetti. When I go out to eat I want FISH~

Every Saturday at 7am...I make enough for the entire week. I give some to my mom, some to my brothers, and if my kids are around I always send some home with them.

Restaurant spaghetti usually doesn't taste very good in my opinion. I think that's because I'm picky about the flavor (how sweet or tangy the marinara sauce is, how firm or soft the pasta itself is, etc). But yeah besides that for a lot cheaper/quicker than restaurant prices I can make my own spaghetti, and it tastes a lot better (to me anyway).

I have never ordered spaghetti at a resturant. I agree I can make it better at home with better taste and cheaper.

oblongmelon do you have a recipie, you would like to share for the sauce? I would love to make it for my family. thanks

I usually don't. Mainly because it just doesn't taste good. Once in a while I will order Gnocchi, but end up being disappointed. They aren't even half as good as what my Grandma makes. Guess there is nothing like home cooking!

mmm gnoccs are only good if they sit in your stomach like lead for about 4 days :)

i have no problem ordering spaghetti in a restaurant. sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not.

of course, as a vegetarian, i often have rather limited menu options, so i'm pretty used to taking what i can get.

I have before at Zio's simply because I am not a fan of their menu but have eaten there many times with a group.

I don't. I make that at home all the time so why get it when I'm out? That is when I'd like to try something different. When I go to Italian places I typically go with tortellini or a heavier pasta with alfredo. Unless it is really hot out, then I'll look for an angel hair with pesto.

I'll get spaghetti when its offered as a side dish to an entree, but I wouldn't order it as a main course.

Does that mean that you don't order soda, or rice, or coffee, or tea, or wine, or etc.......... when you are in a restaurant?

I personally do order pasta when I go to some restaurants but it has to be "homemade" pasta. What I mean by this is that it has to have a good sauce and the noodles used must also be made from scratch not the store bought commercially available type. For that type of pasta you cannot make it for $0.30 a bowl. But I am very picky about where I eat Italian food in general. I guess that comes from growing up in an Italian family.

Hey obby, can you hook a deigo up with that receipe? Please?
I am always interested in seeing how other people cook their sauce and what they put in it. Thanks in advance.

thanks obby for the recipe...

just read it and my eyes popped out of my skull when I read to cook for 6 hours and no more than 13...

why does it need to cook that long?

Ok you sauce lovers..the recipe has been sent out. You can double the amount and freeze it in plastic containers (it lasts for about 3 months in the freezer)if you like..FYI on occasion-I will add a bit of red pepper FLAKES to the sauce to make it a bit more spicy.
Garlic amount is at your discretion but I've enclosed the recommended amount that we've used for years.
Feel free to toss some pork (prebrowned)or chicken (pre-cooked)with bones into the sauce for a richer flavor.
Also NEVER NEVER EVER add green peppers to this sauce while cooking. This was my grandmother's recipe and she swore that adding peppers turns it into CHILI SAUCE..she'll come back and haunt you if you add peppers. ;)

you have to cook it for at least 6 hours on LOW because it changes the consistency and sweetness of the sauce. The longer you cook the tomatoes-the thicker the sauce will be-and the natural sweetness comes out of the tomatoes the longer you cook it-which is why the amount of sugar you actually add is very little.Also-dried herbs (if you use dried) take more time to permeate the sauce than fresh..Personally I prefer using fresh basil and garlic but how many people have that handy all the time (ok I do)The more basil the better off this sauce is!~

Now you CAN go ahead and cook it for a shorter period of time if you like but trust me-the way to go with REAL sauce is long cooking times. You MUST add water to the tomatoes before cooking otherwise the sauce will be like flavorless red mud after an hour or so..6 hours really isnt that long-think about it. Get the sauce going at Noon and it will be ready for dinner :)

I often order spaghetti at *good* Italian restaurants. I especially like it if they have big, fluffy meatballs. I hate it when they put those tiny little hard compressed meatballs in it.

I grew up in a Scandinavian family in a Scandinavian area. I didn't know what good spaghetti was until I was in my 30s. It's quite possible I still don't know, but I'll keep searching.

How do "I" eat it? well over any halfway decent pasta of course, and DONT DRENCH the pasta with sauce..lay the pasta out on a serving tray and put a few ladles of sauce in the middle on top..as people take their servings the sauce will distribute nicely-you'll see..it will be perfect (fyi I always hit the top of the sauce with a sprinkle of fresh Romano and some parsley for color before serving)
as far as the meat goes..remember to cook hamburger well (and then rinse with hot water)before adding to the sauce..I'd add it about half way through.
for pork (with bones) brown each piece of meat on each side in a hot skillet (or even in an oven)with a bit of olive oil..then add to the pot-as long as you start "pre-cooking" the meat by browning-the pork is safe to toss in..the longer it's in the sauce the more tender it becomes.
for chicken-PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE rinse chicken (no skin) before browning..(or baking-your choice)
the longer you cook the meat in the sauce, the more heartier flavor you get from the bones.

I would be honored if you would share your recipe with me. I, too, grew up on and continue to partake in the good stuff. When we were younger, my mother would roll out the pasta in the kitchen and lay out the ravioli on towels on her and my father's bed. My mother (100%) Irish learned from my 100% Italian grandmother and they are both equally excellent...but different! Amazingly even though one learned from the other.

Until we moved from the Bronx, most every Sunday was spent at my grandmother's one bedroom apartment -- the six of us plus six more from my aunt's family (eight cousins). 13 in all. Those are some of my fondest childhood memories.

Still, today, every other Sunday is sauce night at my parent's. It seems most of the six of us -- with families -- make it back there those Sundays. I wonder why????

Mine sauce ain't too shabby either. Learned from Mom but also different from either her's or my grandmother's. No recipe, though, everything by touch and feel.
