General Motherboard question?

I might be a little dense for asking this but I was reading a dvd and in the middle of reading the disk the program gives me an error. I go into My computer and I can't find both my cd drives. I reboot the computer and it doesn't seem to see these drives in the bios, well it does occasionally but not all the time.

Does this problem seem to be hardware related to my motherboard and the IDE?

Dirt, OS, bad/ loose cables, DMA.

I lost a cdrom because of a cheapo "rounded" cable. Opened the case and the cable pulled with almost no resistance. I finally pulled the drive, marked it, and set it on the shelf.

A couple of days ago, I used it to check out another board. Still wanky. In the trash now!
