View Full Version : Why do bad things always happen when I upgrade firmware?

In an attempt to upgrade the firmware of my BEFSR41 Linksys router, it halted halfway.

Boom, no more activity.

Not sure what I can use it for now. Haven't been able to connect to it. It just flashes the DIAG light. Fortunately, like the true nerd that I am these days, I had one new in the box waiting. Had been meaning to return it, but never did... go figure.

Wonder if it'll still function as a switch, eh? THAT, I could actually use.

Damn that sucks to hear. I f*cked up a MB once when I tried to flash the BIOS. It was my fault though because I reset the computer while it was still running. :disa:

when it comes to firmware, I usually follow the old rule "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". That usually holds me off untill the firmware has been tested and i know there are no bugs. Of course during the entire time the geek in me is going nuts :D

Yeah, thanks for empathizing, all.

I was trying to upgrade in a failed attempt to get my VPN to work at work through it.

I can connect through a wireless connection that is *ahem* available. And it uses an SMC router. I'm quite sure that the two of us use the same cable service. But my wired BEFSR41 seems to be insistant on rejecting me in this attempt.

What could give? Anyone have any ideas?

honestly, if the flash died in the middle of the download/upgrade, then you are probably screwed...

Pretty much, call the company and try to get it replaced.

Honestly, I NEVER flash my routers unless I absolutely have to... I've had several bad experiences with this all resulting in having to send the router back to the company to be replaced.

Odd... I've never had any issues flashing my Netgear routers and I've prolly flashed em at least 5 times by now.

I'm with SnotRocket. I've never had a problem either, I didn't know there really was a problem. I guess I've been playing Russian roulette, eh?

A switch forwards packets based on destination MAC address, if I remember correctly. I wouldn't think you'd be able to use it as a switch, because that's still a smart device. Without the firmware, there are no brains to do what a switch needs to do. I could be wrong though.
