alright, i don't know what happened, but since last summer i have had the worst luck with harddrives. i have 4, but trust 1. my maxtor 80gig is C:\ and i really don't want to store data on it other than what's necessary.
i purchased a WD 120gig HD a while ago, had it RMAed, the RMA unit died and I got that back and has been fine so far (then again, it's in my external enclosure... i hope it's fine :) ).
might need your help with this: i have a maxtor 160gb that is giving me stress. i think i used it as backup once so i could reformat my drive. this is on my promise ultra100 tx2 card. when i tried getting my data transfered back over, i started getting messages like "can't move xxx cause xxx is in use". then i couldn't format the drive cause it was "in use". i searched the internet and tried a few things, still got that message. i decided to install windows on it and have it reformat during install. well now it only recognizes the 137gb limit. (god, why can't MS FIX this?!?). now it did work BEFORE. so then i try to format cause it's a slave (and master would be my 80gig) and same error, can't format cause it's in use. i can use the maxblast to get windows to recognize, but it'll only show up as 120 or 137. the promise card recognizes the true capacity. i have win xp PRO SP1, which supposedly fixes that limit....
second, my WD 200gb (dell deal :) ) is scaring me and i'm debating on whether to RMA it or not. it WAS full of mp3, movies, music videos -- FULL. a few days ago i decided to plug it back in (took a break from the comp) and scandisk comes up when booting into windows. i halted the process a few times. tonight i plugged it into my MB IDE chain (not on the promise card) and i let chkdisk run. well, windows recognizes it, woohoo! but it's empy. i lost about 170gigs of stuff. CRAPOLA! so ... you think this drive is reliable? i don't want to download some stuff and get stuff from my friends then have this happen again. i'm gonna try to run ZAR tomorrow when i get time (bed time now). i had to re-download cause it kept on just closing out of the blue. so i downloaded the new demo.
any help / personal experience would help with this. i'm starting to not trust technology for some reason :-/ . help is appreciated with the getting that maxtor 160gig to recognize (i will prolly call maxtor, i don't want to...), and if you would think that 200gig is reliable.
