laptop or desktop

Please help me choose!

1)Personally, I need the convenience and space-savings of the laptop.
So I would buy a lap top.

2)I am going to use my computer (laptop or desktop)
for GPU programming, which means that I may have to
remove or upgrade the video card very often.

I can do that very easily in a desktop.
Can I do that realistically in a laptop?
Is there any laptops, where the video cards are
replacable.

Desktop. If you want to build it yourself, you can get a small form factor. Be aware the industry is moving to PCI express so you would want to wait a few months for that. AGP will leave limited upgrade possibilties in the next couple of years...

People generally dont upgrade vid cards in laptops.

To me... laptops are "appliance computers". You don't plan to upgrade them and you use them for the purposes of what they were bought for. Pretty much they are a convienience item.

Desktops are more flexible and cheaper to upgrade... I prefer them to laptops just because they ARE more flexible and I don't require the mobility of a laptop to do most of what I do.

However I honestly have both, but I do place more empahsis on desktop computing. :D

Definitively desktop. If you use it exclusively for gaming. I personally own both and have found myself on a laptop 99% of the time. I play a good number of games, but I'm not always playing the latest and the newest game out there. Granted, I think my laptop would be able to handle most games out there, there are other issues other than your video card to consider when it comes to laptops. Laptop video is generally not upgradeable. Ram upgrades are more expensive and HDs are slower. Another downside is that laptop parts are tough to replace. In your case, convenience and space saving isn't worth the cost.

certain laptop makers are starting to come out with upgradable videocards(i.e. alienware) but it will be more expensive then a desktop.

I am in the same boat but I am more a of gamer.
