View Full Version : Electric razor or blade?

I'm trying to avoid the bumps and nicks. Anyone using an electric razor and getting a pretty clean shave? If so, which one?
I used a Norelco for a couple of years to avoid the same thing. I found it gave me a very close shave. It didn't last AS long as a regular razor but it did get close. It actually cuts hairs instead of yanks them out. The most important thing with an electric razor is that you have to use it for a while before your face becomes accustomed to it. Once that happens (month or so), shaving with it will be a breeze and close. You can even do it without a mirror. If you want to further protect your face try one of the lotion dispensing razors from Norelco.
That said, I've switched back to a Mach3 Turbo recently. Closer shave and my face can take it now. Just for reference I have to shave every other day. I grow stubble in one day, beard in 2.
I usually use a "Id by Wahl" electric. Not quite as close as shave gel and blades, but it does the job in less than half the time and without the mess. These days though, I'm very scrubby/stubbly because it's hockey playoff season and I have to show love for my Sharks. And I forgot my electric up north besides. And I'm fresh out of Gilette. Seriously.

If you have trouble with bumps and nicks, try shaving with a Mach3 in the shower. I couldn't believe what a difference it made. I shaved with an electric for 20 years because my face couldn't handle a blade. Well, shaving in the shower made all the difference. A cheap shaving mirror is only about $8 at a nationwide retailer that is not considered politically correct to patronize by other members of this board.

I cant stand using an electric shaver, they burn my face. I starting using the new four bladed razor and it's great. Just remember to shave after a hot shower.

I use a Mach3 right now. I just don't use it in the shower. I'll try that tomorrow.

I switch off between my blade and electric. Mostly Electric since i'm too lazy and its quick and good for work. I have this bad boy. I got it at Macy's with a bunch of discounts and rebates. It was about $99 total. It's sweet cause it cleans itself, I only wish that it would clean the upper part of the shaver where I do some trimmimg.

I like a blade better. I shave in the shower and it's smooooooooth. I use electric for a quick shave and it was very close when I got it. After a year it doesn't cut as close. I should replace the rotating blades but its like 30 bucks or more.

I got mine at Sam's Club for about $72 with 4 extra cleaning refills.

Ya, I forgot to say to try in the shower, that helps too :). You could also try changing your shaving cream. Neutrogena For Men makes a nice sensitive one.

I look fine shaving every other day with an electric because I don't grow facial hair very fast. I just use a fairly cheap braun razor now. I used to use a $20 remmington that worked fine until it got real dull. I could care less if I get a real smooth shave though, it is good enough for me and my g/f.

I use a mach 3, here is the problem: The blades are FREAKIN expensive. Retail wants an arm and a leg, and ebay is a little better, about a dollar per blade plus or minus due to shipping. Anyone have a good conneciton on where to get cheap/cheaper blades?

Blades are getting so expensive that it is making me think about going electric. Bumps are usually caused by shaving too close- the hair snaps back below the skin level after it is cut and sometimes has trouble growing back out. I look for coupons for deals on blades- grocery stores out here double coupons so a $1 coupon saves me $2. Save lots on food that way too- just get a Sunday newspaper and check it every week. Takes a little time, but it is worth money!!

Blade is definitely the way to go for a clean shave. Doesn't matter which one, I buy the cheaper ones myself. Blade, dry shave, grow tougher skin. That's the way to go.

i never thought about going to ebay for razor blades :thumb:
i currently shave with an off-brand 3-blade razor (basically a fake mach 3), and i usually get the blades on sale for $3 for a 4-pack. so if i could spend an extra 25 cents and get a mach 3, that would be a pretty good bargain.

Yeah, I have been an ebay person for a while, but I never realized that they were the walmart of the internet too.

I hate shaving, so I prefer wearing a beard. But when I get sick of the beard I use Mach3 razor, never tried electric.

Like someone else mentioned Norelco electric is great for the touch ups during the week (Wednesday usually) but I use the gel and the mach 3 turbo in the shower for the ends. Monday and Friday.

I don't care for electrics. And the Mach3 is mighty expensive, but they sent me one in the mail and I'm hooked.
Sam's Club carries the blades, and a few discount houses have similar prices.
I like shaving soap and a brush, preferably after a shower.
I rinse my face with cold water too. Helped cut down razor-burn to nil.

i'm a blade person, electric razor just don't work for me.. and i actually feel kinda funny after that kind of shave... numbing, and itchy feeling
blades the best, clean.. and fresh :)

you never shave you lazy bum. At least never when i see you
I just bought a new electric, i am usually too lazy to do a real shave. Only problem is the electric never catches everything so i usually have to touch up with the mach 3. Sorta defeats the purpose.
