View Full Version : Monitors: CRT vs. LCD - which is better for the eyes
I have heard that LCD monitors are easier on the eyes. My job requires me to be in front of my computer screen for 90% of my work day. I have noticed that in the past 6 months here my eyes have gotten more fatigued. I'm using a 17" HP 7550 CRT monitor right now.
For those of you who have used both a CRT and LCD, which has been easier on the eyes?
LCD's are far easier on the eyes for most people.

Since LCD's don't scan the screen in order to refresh, they have no flicker. They also have well defined pixels so your eyes focus easier.

I have an LCD at home, so when I come to work with the CRT my eyes hurt. After a few hours I feel like my eyes willpop out of my head. :dead:

LCD's have been scienticfically proven to be good for you eyes. CRT's like stated eariler, refresh it's image periodically at rate that is bad for your eyes. plus CRT's are Cathode Ray Tubes...meaning there is a tube literally shooting laser beams at your eyes.
LCD's have a soft glow and it's much better for your eyes,

Except for in gaming situations.... then I'd prefer to have a CRT. :D

actually, isn't CRT's better for gaming...it's refresh rate it much higher, and you can have better native resolutions compared to LCD's...which produce a ghosting affect if you have extremely fast motion. LCD's are better for word processing apps...isn't it so?

1. its not "good" for you, its just not as bad as a crt
2. Cathode Ray Tubes don't shoot "laser beams", they shoot electrons

Home LCD better than office CRT.
I still want a 24" sony widescreen to play with when I get my 6800.

What should I look for in terms of specifications if I wanted to buy a 15" LCD Monitor. I've been seeing a handful of Dell monitors on EBay advertising .297 dpi and 300:1 or 350:1 contrast. I would like to be able to use a 1024x768 resolution and have no need for anything else. TIA

Look for rise and fall times and DVI if you have a DVI card. Nothing higher than 25 ms IMO.

In regards to LCD's, I had noted that Dell sold their Ultrasharp LCD's for $150 in combination with systems and I was wondering what users thought of the Ultrasharp LCD's from Dell. How often do they come up with that deal? I have been watching Dell deals and they haven't had that deal for 5 weeks.

If you're doing graphics work(design, digital photography, illustrations, etc), CRT's are better. The colors are much more accurate.

When looking for a 15" LCD, the first thing you should consider is looking for a 17" ;) 17" are pretty cheap now. 15" is really pretty tiny.
