EAST 1st Round
IND vs BOS - IND in 5

WEST 1st Round
1 MIN vs 8 DEN - MIN in 5
2 LAL vs 7 HOU - LAL in 6
3 SA vs 6 MEM - SA in 7
4 SAC vs 5 DAL - DAL in 7
EAST 1st Round
1 IND vs 8 BOS - IND in 4
2 NJ vs 7 NY - NJ in 6
3 DET vs 6 MIL - DET in 5
4 MIA vs 5 NOR - MIA in 5
Only picking one upset (and a 4/5 isn't really an upset), but I think the Spurs will have their hands full with Memphis. The Grizzlies are scary, potential to beat any team out west... but in a long series I don't think they'll be able to pull it off. I don't like the Mavs at all, but the Kings have been cold lately.

Not true this year though. With the addition of Spreewell (sp?) and Cassell (sp?), they will pass first round and have a very good shot of winning it all.

y'know, you've got a point bv...so what if kobe can score 40+ points in a game? so what if shaq (barring injuries) is one of the most dominate centers in nba history? you made a good point that since they're rich adolescents that can't get along, they can't get the ring (so how was the ring won THREE times before?). and that raping accusation? yeah, that's really gonna cost them the championship since it's based on PERSONAL MERIT!!!!....:disa: :disa:
[homer] oh btw, i was being sarcastic!
[marge]well duhhhhhhhh!!
everything you've said is a personal attack on the players themselves...it doesn't take away from the fact that they're excellent BASKETBALL players. and they have the ability to whoop ANY team....[whisper]as long as they play defense.

No you can't go on...that's for later. :) We're doing it one round at a time.
And the reason Houston can't win it all is because they can't stop themselves from turning the ball over every other possession.
Once Yao can average 20pts 10brds 2-3blcks a game, thats when Houston will be feared, until then...he needs some more seasoning.

I'm just responding to jel's name calling (personal attacks). I didn't say anything about the Fakers losing to the Rockets. If players can't get along, how do you expect them to play team ball and win even with 4 future HOF? If the Fakers play the way they've been playing D, they ain't going to last.
I just can't wait until the Fakers fall flat on their face after they are defeated in the playoffs this year. :wavey2:
Take it to the Lakers thread fellas. Even a basketball fan that dislikes the Lakers :wavey2: has to evaluate their chance to defeat Houston in round 1. Maybe they will, maybe they won't, just make your pick and we'll see who's right. And that's all this thread's about, making your first-round playoff picks.

Ah looks like I already lost my prediction of the DET vs MIL series....7/8 so far....
whitak24
05-02-2004, 10:42 AM
well, by and large it looks like people were right on the outcome of the series, but not the number of games.
i was shocked by the lack of competitiveness in most of the series. obviously, you can start with the three sweeps (IND, NJ, and SAS), but beyond that, every series except for the NO/MIA series has finished in 5 games. granted, practically every series had some close games. several (LAL/HOU, DAL/SAC in particular) could have gone much longer if the losing teams had converted potentially game-winning shots. so there was good basketball to watch, but it was ultimately a VERY uneven battle in 7 out of 8 series.

That's because it's not best of 5 first round anymore. In a best of 5 first round, a motivated, less talented team can steal a game away, then take the series at home. It's more exciting.
well, by and large it looks like people were right on the outcome of the seriesWell... there have been zero upsets out of seven series so far. Thus I'm not surprised that most people had most of them right. (That said, I missed one of my predictions, picking Allas over Sac in the wild west shootout series.)

Ok... so far in the first round here are the results assuming my calculations are correct. I subtracted the difference between the number of games for each team people guessed from how many was actually won. No extra benefit was given for picking the right team other than the game wins number difference.
If Miami wins the series, Whitak24 will win. The rest of the order will be
second place - Jhiforce
third place - baggio248, ialsohaveadream, RoniMan
fourth place - bachviet, the jello is jigglin,
fifth place - molecularfire
sixth place - ray, kei2
seventh place - attgig
If New Orleans wins the series, it will be tied between baggio248 and RoniMan
second place - Whitak24
third place - Jhiforce
fourth place - ray, molecularfire
fifth place - bachviet, ialsohaveadream
sixth place - the jello is jigglin
seventh place - kei2

I basically said that if someone said a Minn in 4 they picked Minn to win 4 games and Denver to win zero. Since Denver won 1, they were charged one point. If they picked the wrong team ex: Dallas in 7, they picked Dallas to win 4 games and Sac to win 3 games. Since Sac won 4 and Dallas won 1, they were charged 4 points (1 for sac. and 3 for dallas).
The numbers I got was:
If Miami wins - Jhiforce8, ray12, bachviet10, kei12, jello10, mole11, baggio9, attgig21, ialso9, whitak7, roni9
If NOR wins - Jhiforce9, ray10, bachviet11, kei14, jello12, mole10, baggio7, attgig23, ialso11, whitak8, roni7
ex: Whitak was charged 2 for SA, 2 for Sac, 1 for Ind, 2 for NJN, and 0 or 1 for Miami/NOR. So, it's 7 points total.
Someone please check my work. I am the only asian guy that can't do math.
EDIT: I think the problem with the numbers is you're scoring it slightly differently than I am. You said if a game 7 is predicted wrong it's only 1 point, where I think it's 2 (the team picked to win 4 actually wins 3, and the team picked to win 3 actually wins 4).
These are the discrepancies I spotted, unless I made a mistake somewhere

It will hurt you like hell when the Lakers get blown out. You just don't want to face the fact that your Lakers are not invincible and will not win anything else this year accept that little precious "Pacific Division" title. I just hope that the Lakers put up a fight because I don't have any basketball to watch if the Spurs sweep the Lakers.
