I just heard about this on the radio and went to ZDNet for more info. Here's the news brief:
BULLETIN: Judge rules against Napster
Saying there's a strong likelihood that the recording industry will prevail, a federal judge ruled against Napster on Wednesday, issuing an injunction that prevents the company from allowing major labels' songs to be traded on its site. The ruling, which was not expected so soon, could shut down the company. The case is scheduled to go to trial at the end of the year. Full story to follow. -- Lisa Bowman, ZDNet News

GAH! I had a feeling this was going to happen. I guess this opens the door for Gnutella or some other non-server based app.

I just heard on the radio that this injunction will not go in effect until Friday, so Napster shouldn't be affected until then.

Major Labels SUCK!!!
Napster is absolutely wonderful for smaller bands who are interested getting their music out to people who would not otherwise hear it.

SUCK! Oh well, there's always scour exchange.
i dont agree, they dont know how young you are when they are reading your letter. if they get enough letters and calls saying the same things, that makes an impression. the majority of the comments that come in dont even get checked out to make sure they are registered voters in the correct district, so write to anyone, it will matter.

personally I don't think Napster was all that great
I usually get my songs using other ways which work a lot better then Napster
But it is good for music scouring newbies http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Lars is suck
ok heres the deal:
they are appealing the court order this morning...if it gets rejected, then they will be up until midnight PST on Friday, so get all your stuff now.
1) Napster was ok- if you know what youre doing, it shouldn't be your main source for mp3s anyway
2) Scour absolutely 100% Fu@#ing blows
3)it IS though a big dent in online digital piracy...and for "pirates" like me, that sucks
and no pennypinch not "ass pirates" http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Although napster is okay, there is always ftp and irc, never will be shutdown. But for time being good alternatives are scour, imesh, gnutella, and cutemx.

This sucks....and I just got my Nomad II.
Do any of these other sites compare to Napster? What is the difference??
the worst part is not that napster is being shut down, it's that judge patel made her decision based on ignorance and misinformation because the judicial system still wants to side with the large corporations rather than think for itself and set new precidents. she didnt even know there were other sites out there that let you trade music for free, she thought napster was the only one! just based on that, i would say she has no right to rule over this case. a judge should be required to research the topic she is going to be ruling on. i am so tired of these judges screwing up the web based community with their lack of knowledge and haste to get the trial over. i emailed my senators, governor, representatives, and the president this morning. its time to educate the people running the judicial system
Napster was cool for the first couple months, but then it got big. When that happened, I started to find idiots that were posting wrong, or renaming songs. There was also the people that were setting max uploads to 0, so they could stop the sharing. I'm on Gnutella now, and that thing rocks. Once you get the hang of it, you're golden....

if anyone wants to do the same, but doesnt know who to email or call, post your zip code and i'll find it for you. i am so serious about this sh!t it isnt funny, we need to make some noise.

Ya I agree with you there att, I bet half these judges and things have never even listened to an mp3, or even turned on a computer. The majority of judges and politicians are a lot older ( I am guessing like 30-60 around there) and from what I know just with my family is that my aunt's and uncles and older family members have no clue how to do anything on the computer. It sucks cause these are the people who make all the decisions about new high tech things like napster. Same with the msft trial, ha even though they just demolish other companies, but hey the business world is harsh, they will win on appeals anyways.
But ya I would write to my politician and all that, but it will really have no effect on anything because politicians only pay attention to those who give them the most votes, and who votes the most? the 40+ crowd, so us 20somethings don't really have much say on anything, even though we are going to be the ones making all the money and advances in everything soon. Oh well.
