Hello,
I have been lucky enough to become IT guy here at the house. Need some help. Roommate has an HP laptop running XP and recently bought a wireless card so he could finally stop leeching off mine. SMC2635W card trying to connect to a SMC2404WBR router. It recognizes the signal and connects but will drop it a couple seconds later even if it is a couple feet away. Not sure what could be causing this, any suggestions? Thanks.

Is this the only wireless connection in use? If not we can rule out the wireless router. If it is it just adds to the problem solving.

Wireless phones in the house?

Wireless phones are notorious for making your wireless signal drop.... I'd look there first.

Next would be if there is a microwave oven nearby...

Wireless phones in the house?
I'd go one more level of detail and ask if there are any 2.4 GHz Wireless phones.... 900 MHz and 5.8 MHz will not interfere with 802.11b/Bluetooth devices

Thanks for the suggestions. We have 3 wireless phones in the house, but none are in use when the droppage occurs. There is a microwave too, but it is down a hallway and not really close enough to cause problems when the computer is next to the router. There are 3 other wireless connections, none seem to have this problem. He was using my Dlink card for a while before he bought this card, and wasn't having this sort of problem. Think it might be a software conflict, so I am going to try and unistall anything that might be causing it.

I would check firmware updates for both the SMC wireless card and the router. see if that helps.
