I was wondering how many ABCs know how to write and read or speak chinese?
I myself know how to speak fluent Cantonese and am currently learning Mandrian and how to write.
I really wished I stuck with chinese school so that I can read and write chinese right now.

Just want to see how many of you know how to read/write/speak chinese if you are ABC

P.S. applys to other nationalities also.

i'm a SOB(Stale Off the Boat). I've spent the later half of my life here and the the previous half in Taiwan. i was lucky enough to have learned Mandrian before i left so that i could enjoy the 100 tapes long Chinese soaps!

I am a CBC (canadian born chinese) and I can barely understand some Cantonese, but not really, and obviously speak and write none. My big beef with the Chinese schools I went to were that they taught in Chinese. Well, how stupid is that? I'm in Chinese school TO LEARN CHINESE! If I spoke chinese already, why the hell would I be in chinese school! Holy crap, I musta spent like four years in Kindergarten there...

Yeah, I missed taking Chinese in college. Just never had time for it. I imagine taking it when it's geared for non-speakers would be much more beneficial. Still burns me I wasted so much of my life with those morons in Chinese school... http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/mad.gif

What Chinese school did you go to that requires you to take Bible? There's one just like that in Flushing, NY.

heehee what a small world
I use to go to that very same one. (it is on the street that is next to bridge - one of the splits in the kessina/main street intersection)
only went for a few years though
then after a few years of nothing I went to another chinese school - Ming Yuan in Elmhurst.

Yeah! That's another thing! What's the deal with trying to brainwash young children with Christianity while they're trying to learn Chinese? I am in CHINESE school, not Chinese-and-learn-about-God school! I attribute this to my parents, they did send me to a church chinese school, they should have known better.

I'm not an ABC (I was born in Hong Kong, and can speak/write Cantonese/Mandarin), but I just wanted to say that I took Japanese in college, and it was so beneficial to know all those chinese characters in advance http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well, that's our parents fault than right. Not the church's fault. Cause the main purpose of the church is to teach the Bible, not the Chinese.

Hmmmm, but I happened to love the Bible Class portion of the classes, and HATED the Chinese. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

What years did you go? Do you remember the names of your Bible teachers? I remember most of mine. I went there for 6 years, but made it to 3rd grade. Took each grade twice.

I used to live with my grandparents so I can communicate in cantonese fairly well. I also went to Chinese Bible Church where they taught me Cantonese (I only remember how to write my name) and literally beat the crap out of me for being a blasphemous little boy.

Doofy, so what year did you attend?
and/or what age/grade since they split bible study with age groups.

I can speak any language when I'm drunk. http://news.agn.com/forum3d/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

It could be worse guys. The public school system around here indoctrinates kiddies with the bullsh1t notion that socialism is great.

Wow, Don't remember anymore. I started when I was like 6. So probably around '82-'83 and ended 6-7 years later. So I was there way before you.

But I won't be surprised if I saw you there. Or you saw me there before. Cause around the time you were there, I was (and still am) a member of that church now.

you know what was awesome was in Waynes world when Wayne just started busting out with the Cantonese. That was hilarious.

What does a cantonese keyboard look like? I can't even imagine typing on one of those bad boys.
