This was pretty much the first semester where I've had a handful of final projects instead of just final exams for some of the engineering classes I'm in. I figured they would suck majorly but it turns out they were pretty simple and ended up getting some pretty good grades on them.
For material science we had to design some experiments to test a couple types of a product to determine which was better. Luckily, I teamed up with a kid who works for the football team and he was able to get a couple old style Riddell helmets and a newer Revolution style helmet...we ran some energy absorption tests, tensile strength tests and hardness tests and called it a day...pretty simple. The T.A's thought it was pretty cool that we got a hold of some helmets (http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/~hsaubert/P1010008.JPG) and gave us a near perfect score on our presentation. Sweet deal.
In design and manufacturing we worked with Pro Engineer most of the semester during lab and part of our final was to design a piece and machine it to have the students vote on their favorite design. Me and my roomie came up with this cub's logo (http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/~hsaubert/P1010003.jpg) in about a half hour...it actually took longer to machine it, it was over a meg of NC code. Turned out that most of the class liked the Cubs and voted it the third best which netted like a 98% or something...and some of the professors requested to keep the top 4 designs to show in some meetings.

interesting tidbit of info, the helmet in that picture was the one that the university sent in to ABC to put on TV for the BCS game...it had been used by a quarterback who transfered but also happened to be #7 so they could play it off like Brad Banks' helmet
