I grew up in Cerritos and went to undergrad at UCLA - I know Asian. I'm Indian and my best friend and first girlfirend were both Korean - go fig.

What's sad is that those stereotypes with the cars and all are well deserved. My "white" roomate who thought I was being racist challenged me to identify drivers in cars by the car they drove. I offered to do it by the engine noise alone. So I stood on a corner at UCLA one day and turned my back to the traffic and listened to the engine as the cars drove up a hill. I was 87% accurate as to which cars has Asian drivers, whites, blacks, etc.

The point is people do what they're accustomed to and feel comfortable doing. That's OK. Failure to look outside of those limits because of fear or shear ignorance, that's wrong.

OK, Enough Soapbox time. Don't know where the heck that came from...

BTW, from an anthropological/evolutionary-morphological look at it, we're all either Egyptian or Morrocan as that appears to be were the "human" species evolved. Different subspecies later delineated from that as land barriers separated groups...zzzzzz

Here in the UK, "Asian" refers to Indians, Pakastani, etc... Asians (as per US meaning) are called "Oriental" here. (talk about being out-dated!)
As an American studying in the UK, you pick up some differences like these along the way (like you don't say "fanny" here!)

I'm Indian and I always thought of myself as Asian, especially with 70% of my hometown being from Asian continent. I thought this until my dad told me that Indians, Persian, Pakistani, etc, are all biologically of Caucasian decent.

So now I'm just a white boy with a dark, dark tan hehe. When I look at somebody I don't deny their ancestral background - that's just ignorance. I just treat them the same as everybody regardless of color.

I too dropped out of that stupid program right before interviews started and changed to biochem. Hmm.. did you know Josh Young? It think he was your year. And James Hsu? I think Josh is now at Loma Linda for med school and James is still here doing that biochem masters thing. Hmm.. I know a bunch of other 97 grads but I can't think of them now.
