last week my apartment got robbed. happened while i was gone for the weekend -- they got in off the fire escape and exited through the front door.

i'm still annoyed because
a.) i had let my renter's insurance lapse in march (yes, i'm a dumbass) and
b.) i didn't have the security gates closed on my windows. i never used them because i'm on the fifth floor. access to the fire escape is controlled (you can only get to it from in the building). but obviously, it was stupid to leave them open.

so i lost my minolta maxxum 7 plus 3 lenses (new replacement value: $1200+), a couple watches (worth a total of around $200), and some minor jewelry. they also stole my messenger bag which they probably though contained a laptop, but in fact had my bible in it (which is just wrong -- stealing a bible :2far: ).

needless to say, i've had my security gates closed since then.

Yeah, that sucks. I feel you about the Bible too. My carjacker took a really nice one I got as a gift, along with some other choice items.

I'm sorry, that really sucks!

Maybe they'll read the bible and decide to bring your stuff back.

Sorry to hear that Whitak. I would look at your renters policy because sometimes there is a window to reinstate it without penalty. Maybe you will be lucky and still in that window.

Otherwise, I can sympathize...I had a $1200+ mountain bike stolen from a second story balcony that only had access from my room. It couldnt be seen from the ground, so to this day I think someone who knew I had it there was responsible. I didnt have renters insurance but it ended up being covered by my parents homeowners since I was still in school.

That reminds of last year when I was home. I had my car parked outside my parents condo, pretty safe area. My girlfriend and I were going skiing the next day, so it had our skis and stuff in the car(mine where cheap rentals, and hers were just alright). We went to go skiing the next day and I was a little curious when I didn't feel the door unlock when I twisted the key, like it was already unlocked. I thought hmm did I leave it unlocked, and then I notiched between the plastic and metal for the door handle was all bent up, like somebody jammed a screwdriver in it. All the ski stuff was still there so I didn't think much of it with my girlfriend.

We found out a little later, that they had grabbed her messenger bag thinking a laptop was in, while leaving all the ski stuff(boots and pols). It had all her school books and homework for my classes about 2 weeks before her midterms. Look around and couldn't find it and thought it was gone for good. The neighbors found it tossed over some rocks later that day. With al lher stuff still in it.

But don't you think when people are going to steal something, they might take a real quick look in it to find out that nothing valuable is in the messenger bag? Idiot robbers.

Sorry to hear you got robbed, atleast you weren't home when it happened.

unfortunately, it's only a 30-day window.

oh well....if you net out the deductable, and look at the actual cost to me of the stuff i lost (i had bought the camera stuff used), i'm only out around $700.

not really a loss i can afford to replace right now, but not horrible. and it could have been so much worse, as i have a few thousand dollars of home theater equipment and a few thousand dollars in cds/dvds which they didn't touch. not to mention the desktop pc, laser printer, and scanner, the 3 other cameras (cheap digi, manual SLR, and $200 p&s), and the palm pilot that they missed. i'm also extremely fortunate that i had my laptop with me, because not only would have that been a big $$ loss, but it would have seriously screwed up journal competition.

plus, as someone mentioned, i could have been home when they came in, or walked in while they were in the middle of the robbery. or it could have been a mugging at knife or gun-point, which is the fashionable crime around here. so all in all, it was a bummer, but obviously not as bad as it could have been.

Damn that sucks whitak sorry to hear it. You can blame yourself but you really shouldn't. You just had some bad luck. Now what you gotta do is go rob somebody else to keep the circle of life going ;)

Just kidding man. I feel for you.
