farkin' beasts ate the tops off our green beans. we've grown them the last two years. it's the cat's responsibility to keep them OUT!!!

This is our back yard. The garden is in the far upper right corner by the pine trees.

we have a garden that just coming up. we can't really plant anything here in michigan until mid-may because of the threat of frost.

freakin' fur devils at the entire tops of the plant off.

maybe my cat would be so fat if he did his job and chased the rabbits away. however, he does kill 5-10 moles every year so i won't kill him quite yet. :)

do you grow your own herbs? holy cow. there's nothing like adding your own fresh basil to stuff. my wife grows 2 kinds of basil, chives, oregano, and thyme. unbelievable how much of a difference these homegrown spices make. everyone can/should do it. you can just set the pot on your deck, porch, etc. and pick off a piece when you need it.

i thought i'd just throw this in. this is the homemade chicken salad sandwich with fresh tomato and avacado on an onion bagel i had tonight. of course the chicken salad has fresh basil in it. simply amazing.

Is there any way that you could put some chicken-wire or other fencing around your garden area to keep them out?

Sprinkle dog fur clippings around the area and put dried blood in your garden. They sell it at every landscape place....it works to keep them away. The other trick is to fence in the area. 3 feet high normally prevents rabbits. Higher for deer. You can also place cages around the bottom of you plants when you plant them to prevent burrowing animals from attacking. There are also some other plants that you can plant that naturally keep the varmits away.

Crushed egg shells will protect you against snails and slugs.

why is the garden so close to the pine trees? - seems like it wouldn't get much sun and also the trees provide a haven for rabbits. :P

dunno. i just put it there so it wouldn't be a huge non-grass-having hole out in the middle of the yard. it gets a lot of sun. the yard is fenced on 3 sides. i jus need an additional 10 feet of fencing on each side of the house to close it in. then i won't have any more of the little furry bastards.

Yes I do-but I only make it fresh.
a saucer plate size of olive oil in the bottom of the pot
one full small head of garlic, chopped
3-4 lbs of tomatoes, peeled, seeded and smashed
1 cup red wine, marsala or sherry-your preference
1 small can of tomato paste
1 pinch of salt
1-2 teaspoons white sugar (or to taste)
a handful of basil-corsely chopped
oregano-half the amount of the basil
one small onion-chopped
one teaspoon real butter(for a nice glaze)
one half cup of h20

add onions, wine and garlic in bottom of hot pan, simmer for a few minutes-then add tomatoes, basil, oregano, paste, water and sugar, salt. Cook about 1 hour. Add butter about 10 minutes before serving over "rag" pasta..(homemade preferably)

You know, a dachshund would really help solve that rabbit/mole/gopher/cat/badger problem you have there. Just last week Lucy the wiener dog was going after the ground squirrels of Redondo Beach with some success.

a handful is roughly half a cup-but add more if you like.

cheapie, are you sure it's rabbits? because it might be deer. they love to eat gardens up too.

btw, your original post cracked me up. first pics of the garden, then the cat, then a discussion of fresh herbs, and suddenly....HERE'S DINNER!!! :heh: just a funny sequence.

also, nice use of the boobies pic :D

lol. i think we would freakin' flip if we saw a deer in my backyard. that would be so cool. naw...i'm pretty sure it's rabbits.

and let me tell you. that sandwich was one of the best ones i've ever had. yummm. yesterday afternoon we make shiskabobs (sp?) with pork tenderloin that we had marinated in teriyaki sauce with a little bit of OJ to help break it down. i'll post pics later. hehe. good stuff. i had leftovers for lunch.
