View Full Version : S: Ebay Purchase DOA...

Dayuum... I knew my luck would run out sometime.
Well last week, I purchased an Alpine CHM-S630 CD changer to replace the CHM-S600 model (about 8 years old) I was currently using.
I won an auction earlier this week and the Changer was delivered yesterday. Externally, it looked excellent... however when I stuck the cartridge in and plugged it in to my head unit it didn't work, nor would it eject the cartridge.
So I e-mailed the guy who sold it to me and he said that it was working just fine when he shipped it... (or at least it was working fine when he took it out of his vehicle...) but now it doesn't work.
I had someone look at it... to verify that it wasn't something that could be easily fixed, and for the most part, without taking it completely apart he didn't see what was causing the problem... however since this unit is electrically identical to the changer that I was replacing, then we ruled that out as a cause...
So now I have a delimma... what to do now?
I sent the seller another reply telling him of my findings and gave him the following options:
A) I send the unit back him, he refunds the money and he fixes it and re-sells it.
B) I go get it fixed and we split the cost of the repair (unless it would cost more than the unit is worth... then we revert back to Option A)
Pretty much I tried to contact him about this issue as soon as it was discovered so that he wouldn't think that I was playing a game or trying to deceive him or something.
So what do you guys think of this? Have you ever had anything come in DOA from an E-Bay seller... How did you handle it? Did you get stuck with it?

I sent out a perfectly working celeron chip and they got and said it didnt work (they also mentioned that they were A+ certified). So I told him I would refund the money when I recieved the chip and when I recieved it I found that the ***hole bent most of the pins out of shape. It was in a slot 1 converter when I sent it to him and he couldnt put it back when he mailed it. Since I am too kind I split the money in half and he was still pissed. I bent all the pins back so it would fit and the celeron 466 still works to this day in my parent in laws computer.

I can understand for something like that... (computer parts), however on a car CD Changer, you can only plug it in one way... you can only stick the magazine in one way. Either it works or it don't... I didn't mess around with any of the internal mechanicals of the unit... therefore it's just broken.
I just found out today, it would cost $25 to get an "inspection" to certify that it is broken and $89.99 in labor + parts to fix it.
More and more, I'm leaning towards the "send it back" option...

was the item insured? If so then tell him to reimburse you and then file a claim for his money.

Go with option A. It seems like less of a hassle that way.

Not neccesary the best option, but it is definatly an option.

I had a used printer come to me doa after being kicked around the postal service for about a month. Fortunately it was insured and I got a full refund and I kept the ink carts that came with it.

I had something VERY similar to mine and I thought the thing was DOA. It would whirr a little, but would not do anything else. The problem turned out to be that one of the CD trays had popped out of its slot and was jamming the changer. It was a simple fix for my local Alpine dealer and took no parts. Just had to remove the cover and slide the tray back into the magazine. Then everything worked fine. Hope this helps.

Well I had it checked out and they took it apart... but it was still no dice. The magazine wouldn't load and it wouldn't eject.
We even tried a different magazine... same story. Pretty much something in there is "mucked up"... so I'm just gonna have to send it back.

Well since he is in Maine, the cost of gas alone would be more than I paid for the changer...
yeah df give him a blow job :heh:

Well... I finally got a response back from the seller today.
As it turns out, FedEx initially denied his "claim" stating that they didn't feel that they were the cause of the product failure... well I guess he must've argued with them (since he claimed that it was working 10 minutes before he put it into the shipment packaging) and they offered to pay him about 85% of the amount I paid for the item.
Well the seller stated that he gave them confirmation to send that payment directly to me... He also told me that they shipped the broken item back to him as well.
Now here's the rub... he offered to send the unit back to me so that I could use the settlement money to go get it fixed. Pretty much it is gonna cost at least the settlement amount to have it fixed which sucks... but the flip side is that I've already paid him through PayPal and even if I just left well enough alone, I'd lose on the transaction because the settlement was less than the payment... and the unit is still inoperable.
So now I'm waiting for him to send me the unit back and for the payment to arrive so that I can send it to the repair facility and get it fixed. And on top of all of that, I've got like 10 days left before my 30 days to file a claim expires with PayPal just in case he doesn't fulfill his part of the deal.
So far he's had decent communication with me... but still... it looks like I'm gonna end up with the short end of the stick.
Talk about "suckage"...

I would refuse it. You didnt order a broken unit, its his responsibility to give you a unit in working condition, not yours to get it fixed. i would file the claim with paypal, explain the situation and refuse to accept either the money from FedEx or the broken unit.
Legally, its the responsibility of the sender to insure that it gets there in working condition. If it breaks in transit, its his responsibility. Tell him to refund you your money or you are getting a lawyer involved. If he questions it, tell him to ask an attorney himself.

I do agree with what you are saying here, however since he is willing to send me the unit and the money to fix it, I guess I'm willing to fool with it.
The thing is... even used, these changers usually sell for around $130 - $150 used on Ebay... and the brand new price is around $199 - $249. I figure... I've already got $120 invested in it, and the repairs will probably come out to right at the dollar amount of the settlement.... afterwich I'm guaranteed that it will work from a certified Alpine technician, which is probaby better assurance than just buying cold from someone else.
Either way, the guy has been pretty "up front" with me... and I'm trying to be the same way on my end. However, if his unit and that payment don't get to me by the 29th of this month, then I am filing a Paypal claim.

Well today I finally got a "conclusion" on this matter....
I took the unit to the local Alpine repair facility... and left a $50 deposit for it to be looked at. Pretty much they told me up front that labor was going to be $89.50 plus parts to fix it.
Well I got it back today... turns out that there was something "bent" inside the unit and it didn't require any parts to fix it... so pretty much I'm just out $89.50 for the repair charge.
Good thing that the "settlement" amount was for $104... therefore I actually ended up making out about $15 better than what I originally paid. But then again, I guess I earned that $15 in sheer hassle alone.
Oh well... at least now I have a working changer with a 90 day "labor" warranty. Whoo hoo... :wow: :D

Well the HEMI only has a half block throw....(with a pair of 10s and the rest the "factory Infinity system")
Now... the NAS-T Bird definitely rocks for blocks and blocks. :D
