big bicyle baskets

so i'm thinking about getting a bike so i can ride it around town for errands that are too far to walk but that i'd rather not drive too, ie getting groceries.

i'm thinking about this bike:

i want something big and comfortable since i'll be riding in traffic. and i want it cheap. for a "real" bike i want a santa cruz blur, but i digress.

anyway, where can i get some panniers big enough to hold grocerys? i'd like to be able to carry 4 regular sized (like paper sized) grocery bags. big steel baskets would be fine..cheap is the key.

also, sportsauthority was having a sale a couple weeks ago, and got my sister a mongoose that was originally for 300 for like 150.
though i dunno if cheapie would approve of mongoose either.

it's not so much as i'm looking for certain brands as much as there are brands/stores that i would avoid at all costs. if you buy any bike, even an extremely cheap one from your local bike shop they usually will size it for you, make sure it's in perfect working order, and give you a year's worth of free service on it. the bike assembled at wal-mart is unlikely to be adjusted/tuned correctly. you will most likely have to mess with the brakes/cables, etc. again, bikes are my favorite subject and i'm always hoping people buy from a local bike shop. but that's just me. actually, boobies are my favorite subject but it's hard to study them and become an expert on them when you're married...so :shrug: bikes it is.

well, i won't buy it from wal-mart unless i can't find it elsewhere.

i've checked out electra (and some other brands), i really like them. in fact that huffy is a knock off of the electra hollywood which is almost 3x more than the huffy and is a single speed.

mind you, i'm not a big fan of huffy's "wal mart" line either. but we're talking about a bike that:

--will be ridden only on the road
--will be left out in the rain

i really don't need a high end bike here; at least i don't think so. why would i spend 3x more? heck, it's even got aluminum wheels that won't rust. lifetime frame/fork warrenty. and it's not very complicated..v brakes and 1 deraillur. like most kids, i had some huffys when i was younger and they seemed to last for years with much abuse. why wouldn't this one last for years without being abused?

well, if i buy it from wal mart it will still be in the box...i'll put it together myself. i have a decent knowledge of them from by BMX days when I was younger.

My GF got a huffy from walmart. It is the heaviest bike I have ever seen. Might be tiring to ride long distances. More exercise though

What bike were you looking at? Giant Iguana is a good bike for the price.
You can probably find it below $500. Don't get Mongoose. They used to make decent bikes but now they are reported as one of the most prone to break bike around.

Remember you kinda do get what you pay for. If your not going to do a lot of crazy stuff, don't get a bike with rear suspension. Get a better hard tail with some decent forks instead.

Or be like me and get a $70 Target bike and stick to bike trails. Just remember to stand up when going over big bumps, or the boys take a beating.
