View Full Version : popped collars -- what's up with that!
?
a lot of people (well college aged kids) are popping their collars up on their polo shirts... has anyone else seen this? one of my gal friends tried to pop it at a party, but bah, i just don't get it.
they must have seen someone doing it on one of them reality shows..or maybe on MTV.

Its a prep thing. Rich country club kids are all doing it. Its a pretty good litmus test of people that need a beating.

it used to be happening in the 70's i believe, so it's another fad that's making a comeback.
i actually don't like seeing it.

Usher Raymond might be responsible for this... as part of his "resurrection" of Micheal Jackson moves from back in the 80s. :D :hihi:

Pop Ya Collar
by Usher
Hello everybody, welcome today to the wonderful world of U.
Now check it, you have two options you can eat it or throw it away...
See it's a shame that when you're working hard
doing well people hate you
yeah buying nothing else but the best for yourself they really hate you
yeah ya gotta live for you and no one else
don't let em make you feel like you're not being real
just live how ya wanna live you gotta do for you
(Dig that)
If you work hard play hard
(Dig that)
And do what you wanna do
(Dig that)
Just pop ya collar don't let what people say bother you
(Dig that)
You perpetrators I got something to say
(Whats that?)
You can eat it or throw it away
(Picture that)
You're just mad cause you're following in my tracks now can u dig that? Hey
[Chorus 2x]
Hey ladies
(Yeah)
Hey fellas
(Yeah)
You know you're doing good cause they're jealous
they wanna hate you cause you're a go-getter pop ya collar
don't let 'em sweat ya
You can see me every week hanging out with a different girl sitting next to me
cause I'm not about to settle down right now
I gotta be free some of y'all fellas might be jealous but y'all know that don't faze me
I just pop my collar tip my hat and turn my backs on the ones who hated me
(Dig that)
Never going home alone
(Dig that)
If she follows then you know it's on
(Dig that)
She gets the beeper not the cellular phone
(Dig that)
I let her know I won't be around for long
(Dig that)
To all you haters I got something to say
(Whats that?)
You can eat it or throw it away
(Picture that)
Stop hatin, wishin, waitin, anticipating for my heat to fade
[Chorus 2x]
I break my neck for the things I get
so much sweat just so I can get that check
and I'm not gonna let nobody bring me down (Nobodys gonna steal the crown)
because I eat good I live good, I rock good, my life good
if you got a lot and you're working for it pop ya collar don't be afraid to show it
[Chorus fades out]

Hahahaha! That was a fad in the mid 80s. Back then is was also a pretty good indication of someone who could benefit from a good beating.

i see a lot of people doing it around here. (huge surprise....columbia is a world full of tools who could use a good beating.)
some of the people who do it are ok though, and obviously just mindlessly following fashion.

:stupid:
You only have to see 80's movies to view this fashion mistake. I believe Pretty in Pink and Better Off Dead ("2 Dollars!!" :heh: ) are fine examples of this. Definitely anyone copying this now needs to get slapped around for at least 5 minutes.

i'm usually ok with a lot of fads. but somehow, you have totally nailed it. these people def. need a beating. it's always ladies in 12yo mercedes and people that are attempting to hold on to the shred of coolness that they thought they had in the 80's. i seriously want to punch people that have their collar up.

man, being on the UNC campus i see it all the time. i effin' hate it! just drives me batty. although honestly i just want to laugh more than beat them.
in fact just the other day i was comming out of the pita pit and as a looked to my right here's this frat rat strolling towards me with a bright yellow polo shirt with the collar flipped up. i made direct eye contact (at least i think..he also had on some real dark sunglasses...full on 80s style) and just busted out laughing. he sort of bucked up and looked and me and i just kept walking, got in my truck, and drove home laughing all the way.

It seems to be hit or miss in Australia. I'd guess 40% of people wear a popped collar. Kind of a thing to keep you warm during the winter months here :)... Actually it is just a silly style, and while I don't condone it, I am appaled by the lack of sensitivity here, everyone can dress what they like, who are you to judge... If you don't like it, don't hang out with them or inform them they look ridiculous, don't complain behind their back.

Ok, here's how retarded I am. For a second, I actually wondered, "Winter?"
Having completely missed out on the Australia part before... I'm going back to my hole now. :P

The popped collar thing is stupid. It's been all the rage in Korea. And I still have to roll my eyes when I see people poppin' them up. Let the 80's die, please!

And spiked hair is supposed to be cool?
I guarantee 5-10 years from now people will look back at spiked hair and will laugh at this silliness just as my generation looks back at greased flat tops, long sideburns, DA's and Afros.
IMO, what a person does with their collar is less silly than what they do with their hair.

spiked-hair and popped collars are different imho. spiked hair is just a thing to do. something to look cool. popped collars are done by people who seem to give off a "i'm better than you...you poor poor stupid clueless person"
that's why i want to punch them.

Exactly. I tend to think my hair style makes me look better, and judging from feminen reactions based on various hairstyles I've had, it does. I tend to think popped-collar people look like pompous jackasses who genuinely think becase their Lacoste collar is flipped up they are better than everyone around them. Its so sad when such a small thing like that carries such strong connotations.

cheapie and canta summed up why this fad is so f-ing annoying perfectly. it's like wearing barely-tinted sunglasses indoors to try to prove how cool you are.
and like i said, i have friends who do it, and they're actually not pricks. but the collars make them look like pricks, which annoys me even more. it's like "you're a cool guy. turn down your f***ing collar"
cheapie
06-12-2004, 05:13 PM
perhaps these kids doing it aren't pissed off by it b'cuz they weren't around when the pricks were doing it in the 80's and don't have the same frame of reference. sometimes when i'd hang out in the coffee shop my wife working in i'd see these older snobby ladies come in with them. i'd want to tell them, do you realize you look like a total tool and that the only reason no one has told you is because they're prolly worried about pissing you off?
I have a new strategy: go up to someone with a popped collar and say, "Here, let me fix that for you." :)

what? you must be a nOOb. we have argued longer and far more vehemently about things that mattered less. furthermore, this is one fashion statement that needs to be STOPPED. can i get an amen? i have/had no problem with the resurrection of the mohawk, the trucker cap, the bell-bottoms, or the pink izod shirts. but the popped collar must NOT make a comeback!
Cantacuzene
06-13-2004, 11:01 AM
I'll second that. People wouldnt support a clothing movement made to brand people as second class citizens, why should we allow one that brands people first class citizens?

no ****ing way. i have no problem with pretty much every other fashion. you wanna pierce everything on your body? no problem. you want to wear leg warmers, tights, and floppy sweaters? you look like a dork but ok. you want to wear all black, led zepplin shirts, etc? cool.
you want to pop your ****in' collar like you own me and the rest of the world? be prepared for me to stare at you like i'd like to push your nose through the back of your head.
