if you are going to go with clothes... do NOT buy them clothes that fit the baby now. They will outgrow it in a week or two. Instead buy them clothes for 6-12 months or beyond. Most likely they have enough newborn stuff and they probably will get more. I find that giving lots of little items of clothing (not just one) is useful. Baby bibs are unnecessary right now. But blankests and DIAPERS! are great. You can never have enough diapers. But once again opt for the larger sizes (1-2) instead of newborn stuff.

Get her a silver keychain or locket that holds a picture or two, get it engraved with the baby's name & birthdate :)

Amazon had a smathering of diapers on sale this past week. I told a co-worker she snapped some up since they were 4 bucks cheaper than babies-r-us. You can walk through Toys-R-Us and look at the baby section to get ideas. Diaper genie, stroller, walkers, etc.

I bought my friends kid some lakeshow gear and my friend and the family loved it. I never have a problem as long as its for someone from LA. Either way they get some Lakers or Dodgers gear.
Summer is here, but it goes by fast so try to use that month size chart and leave the gift receipt. Oversized is fine.

Forget personal.... I always buy my friends who have babies Mega Packs of diapers, cause you know they are gonna need em...
Now if you just HAVE to buy them a "sentimental/memory" gift... then why not a custom "baby book" or an embroidery pillow with the baby's birth information on it. :D

Nija, I love that idea. Now me, I would also go for the practical choice. Diapers.
Hey do they have a registry?
I know my sister found this to be very good.
Boppy (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/baby/B000069RAO/qid=1087046087/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/102-8589487-8340135)
It helps the baby sit up. The mother can sit on it or use it for nursing. My sister mostly used for helping the baby sitting up.

i love it.
when they first found out the baby's gender (it's a boy), apparently the ultrasound tech was like "oh, it's a boy. it's QUITE obvious." so of course my friend's husband was thrilled because it implied that the baby was well-hung :heh:

i would suggest getting them a pack of onesies (sp?). you can't have enough of them. alternatively you can go to your local gap kids and go to the back of the store to the clearance rack for infants. gap kids sells very cool baby clothes the parents' will think you're awesome for buying them.. gap drop the price of clothes immensely once they are out of season which will work perfect if you are buying for 6 months or so in advance. try not to get anything seasonal-specific. (i.e. don't buy a big sweater because it might fit the kid in the summer instead of the fall or winter.)
this is the sale page for baby boys. (http://www.gap.com/asp/Dept_index_all_paging.asp?wdid=5070&pgnb=0)

Think practical first-then "special" later....I don't suggest buying diapers unless you know what kind she prefers...some like huggies, some like pampers..etc...
You can never have enough crib sheets, undershirts, and little socks-
buy mom a nice basket of lotions and pretty smelling things..gifts for the baby are nice but its mommy who did all the work and she deserves something too...
and then get a savings bond for the baby.
I agree with Obby. I get my friends massages as baby gifts. Or, you can arrange for some meals to be sent in.
