ROCHESTER, New York (AP) -- An elementary school teacher was placed on paid leave for washing a boy's mouth out with soap after he shouted an obscenity at a classmate.

Lori Thomas, 48, who has taught for six years at inner-city School 22, said she was stunned when a 10-year-old boy directed "a vile, very nasty sexual reference" at a third-grade girl in March.

Thomas said she didn't want the boy, who had frequently been sent home for unruly behavior, to earn another one-week suspension.

She took the boy to the nurse's office, she said, "put a drop of soap on his lower lip, washed it out immediately and told him I never wanted to hear filth like that coming out of his mouth again."

"Old-fashioned ways work," she said unapologetically.

The boy behaved for the remainder of the day and didn't complain to his foster mother, Thomas said. The boy's brother told district officials what had happened, she said.

Thomas was suspended indefinitely. The district could either fire Thomas -- even though tenure provides such teachers "a lot of protection" -- or level "a lesser amount of discipline," said Joanne Giuffrida, personnel chief in the 6,000-employee school district.

"I wish we could have handled this more expeditiously too," Giuffrida said. She said an investigation will likely be completed within two weeks.

More than 40 relatives of children in Thomas' class have asked for her to be reinstated.

screw that. put her back in, and give her a slight slap on the wrist. somebody's gotta teach that kid.

Little bad ass kid will end up in prison. His foster parents don't care and the people that are trying to correct his bad behavior are being punished. :disa:

let him get suspended then. She didn't want him to get suspended so she pull this stunt but gets herself in trouble. This isn't Star Trek II...sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

EDIT: blah...I guess as a teacher you have to save everyone no matter how bad in hopes of reforming them to a productive person. Ok...reinstate her and give her a slap on the wrist. Kids, teachers, parents and the law these days make school environments tough. Sigh.

Narrator: Over the years I got to be quite a connossieur of soap. Though my personal preference was for Lux, I found that Palmolive had a nice, piquant after-dinner flavor - heavy, but with a touch of mellow smoothness. Life Buoy, on the other hand... YECCHH!

Continued narration: I found that the industrial Borax soap that my school could afford was strong enough to wash out much more than my mouth. One time, after swallowing a small bit of it, I ended up with sparkling clean feces for a week.

if you're going for the maximum effect... there's no better soap than Ivory. They are by far the soap that gets the fastes response and the best behaved kids. Guaranteed to work or your money back.

I got my mouth washed out with soap once when I was like 8 and said something really bad to my mom when I was angry at her for something. Since then I havent cursed a single time around my parents.
