View Full Version : Stupid Adware

So apparently some forms of adware are running on my computer. I've tried d/l multiple things to get rid of them. A few would scan, but not delete the files. I found one called Ad-Ware 6. Supposedly it found a bunch and deleted them all, but when I search for Perfect Nav (which is the major pain) it still shows as being on my computer. Anyone recommend a free program for me so I can get rid of this. TIA!

Try spybot. I use both ad-aware and spybot in conjunction to cover all the bases.

I used SpyBot and it never finds/found the ones that the AdWare found. It got rid of the spyware.

That's why I use both of them--seems like one is better at finding certain kinds of stuff than the other but between the two, they seem to get almost everything. :)

well, currenty, i'm being infected by these various "seach" engine type adwares...
i've run spybot and adware and they're still here. i've gone so far as the mess around with the registry to maybe try to disable it...all that really accomplished was having me reinstall my sound drivers.
i'm resorted to my last option...which unfortunatly is reformatting. these buggers are nasty....
tvmedia.exe is one of they, and so is blastsearch tool bar, and lycos tool bars....i should stop perusing through porn sites eh?

But what should I use to get rid of the ones that neither will delete? So far I think the only culprit is Perfectnav.

i agree - these spywares in IE are getting harder and harder to remove these days.
i had one of those pesky ones, and even though i was clean of any and all spyware, it seemed to have left something behind, cuz my IE never got back to its original speeds.
so i reformatted, reinstalled, and decided to use Firefox exclusively. i use IE only if an important site STRICTLY requires the latest IE version (filling out govt forms, financial transactions, etc). and thats very rare. Plus i would test out firefox on it and ive been able to use it with ease and no problems/incompatibilities cropping up.
but yeah, prevention is key *cough*avoid pr0n sites*cough*

I used to think the combination of Ad Aware and Spybot could take care of anything. However right now one of my machines is infected with the Wintools and NCash spywares (browser hijack) and I can't get rid of them no matter what I try. I have even tried going into the registry and deleting the Wintools entries but they reappear everytime I restart. In msconfig if you deselect all the Startup items, Wintools will start anyways and will show up the next time you run msconfig as a selected item. This started when some dipschitt installed the latest Kazaa that gets its revenue through ads. Needless to say, I have revoked this persons Admin privilidges (XP Pro) and ability to do anything but run programs. But I might have to wipe and reinstall if I can't get these damn ads out of there.

eSDee, have you tried CWShredder or HijackThis?
Google them, free, and lots of forum help available as well...
Javacool Spyware Blaster will keep that kind of stuff from coming back after you've finally got the system clean.

IE uses/relies heavily on scripts, and spyware easily exploits that. understand that spyware is/are nothing more than simple scripts written with malicious intent. theyre written specifically for IE, since these a-hole-tards that write them know that 99% of the people that surf the internet use IE. it doesnt help the fact that IE still has more holes than a slice of swiss cheese.
not that they cant be infected by spyware, but FF, mozilla, opera and other alternative browsers CAN also be susceptible to similar attacks if something is written specifically for them.

i just helped 2 friends with the same prob this weekend.... one on-site...completely clean, and one via phone.. (i'll have to followup with later)
1) download google toolbar, and keep that popupblocker on
2) download and install adaware -> run and delete all.
3) download and run spybot search & destroy -> run and delete all (ignore adaware warning)
4) download and run a virus scanner -> i use www.free-av.com (http://www.free-av.com/) with great success.
5) download and run hijackthis....->this takes some knowledge of what you've installed on your computer and ability to recognize things that are adaware. when u run this, go through anything that may seem fishy and google that process or registry entry(using your newly installed google toolbar :P). usually if it's bad, a google search will reveal it.

Try bazooka Spyware Scanner.. It doesn't remove them, but it points you to a site which has directions on how to.. I was using spybot search and destroy but it couldn't even find this last wave of search bar spyware. I can't believe that crap. WHo are the losers who build this stuff????

Spybot is designed and supported by a loser that puts out an excellent program which is offered for free to anyone who wants it. AFAIK, the author of spybot works on it mostly by himself, but has the assistance of the web community which helps id spyware. Guess what, one person, or even a team of people cant track the latest spyware as soon as it is put out. So far, there isnt a comprehensive program that I know of that can detect every single type of spyware out there. Maybe you should do better?

Check to see if Sysupd.exe is running as a process. Somone mentioned WinTools and it seems to be related to machines infected with this trojan.
Make sure you remove any spyware active x installs from IE. Go to internet options>/(temporary internet files)Settings>View Objects and remove anything that looks suspicious.
