More of a softer side post but if you have black shoes clean them with leather cleaner. I still have no clue about white shoes though. I think you can buy a bottle of white shoe cleaner at Vans but I've never tried it.
I've used 409 on my cheap leather sneakers, and it worked well..

Anything leather I go through the whole deal myself (leather stripping, saddle soap, wax) and with anything else, I gave to my mom to send off to a company that cleans it well.

if it's suede, use baking soda...rub it into material gently-then brush it off briskley with a soft brush..(get a brush in the baby department)...this usually works well to lift dirt and gack that you get on the suede-and it reworks the grain of the material to get that suede effect...for things like water stains and use CARBONA -spot lifter of dry cleaners everywhere..it's in a clear bottle with a dab on top like a bingo marker...it drys pretty quick-turns the stain into powder then you brush it away..or..you can just buy shoes that AREN'T SUEDE and save yourself a ton o' headaches.
