This is actually a followup on the NSS post I made about Iceland before...

Because I initially booked those cheap tickets for my brother and me, and booked for my parents after, my parents were going to come back Wednesday (today) around 7pm. We on the other hand were scheduled back at 7pm, and had stopped at the Blue Lagoon (http://www.bluelagoon.com) which is a geothermal spa. What better way to spend pre-flight at a spa trying to relax, right?

Well, the Keflavik airport is about 50 minutes away from Reykjavik, with the Blue Lagoon about 2/3 of the way to the airport. After we left for the airport from the Blue Lagoon with about 1 1/2 hours before the takeoff, we were talking about what we were going to do/eat/etc when my brother and I got back. Somehow the discussion of where the car keys (we parked the car at JFK) and the house key were came up. Just to make sure, at the airport we checked to see if I had the key in my backpack where it originally was. Sure enough, it wasn't there, and my mom thinks she mistakenly put them away in my dad's suitcase, which was sitting comfortably at the guesthouse about 50 minute one-way car ride away.

So from JFK we take the subway to Manhattan where we ate, and then walked another 15 blocks to Port Authority to catch a bus to get us home. I had run into an Internet cafe and found the number for a locksmith and made arrangements for an emergency lockout. From the bus stop is another 20-minute walk in the middle of a US highway (not very walkable, it's NJ). By the time we had gotten home, it was 11:45pm, and we were in the house by 12:20am. The trip home alone took us around 3 hours, whereas a simple car ride would take no more than an hour, and the total cost was close to 150 bucks with the rides and the locksmith fees.

But, after all, we are home, however difficult it was, waiting for my parents to come back. All in all, it was an awesome trip. Iceland's an amazing place, and I would definitely go back. Lots of stories, capped by this one, will be remembered for sure.

What's a little disconcerting was that the locksmith really didn't check proof of residency before he began picking the lock. I know that from the context it was very obvious that it was our house, but you can never be too sure...

Haha.. If I signed up for Icelandair's FF club, I would have gotten the miles for the trip which I believe would have been around 5,000mi. However, because there is very little chance that I will fly Icelandair any more than like once or twice more, and that the mileages don't convert to anybody else's, I decided to just forego the trouble. It is amazing though to see that the airline was willing to hand over miles to a zero-dollar fare customer. Of course, there will always be some serious FlyerTalkers who will get miles and do crazy with it, but like you, cheapie, I am a relative novice when it comes down to this stuff.

Icelandair's entire flight is B757-200/300s, and the legroom I had in their coach class over to KEF was probably the smallest I've ever had. On the way back it was better, with standard coach legroom, but it was definitely insane on the way there - I'm 5'9, and I don't think anyone taller would have fit.

All of the complaints aside, Iceland's a beautiful place - I suggest that anybody looking for a relaxing trip look into it, especially if you're in the east coast. Icelandair flies direct from Minneapolis, BWI, JFK, Boston, and Orlando. Go in the summertime, though, or you'll be stuck with a 20-hour night. In the summer, on the other hand, the sun literally stays up all day. At around midnight, the sun seems to set, and then the sunset lasts for like two hours, still bright, and then it gets brighter again around 2am.

IF you ever hear of a deal so unbelievable again, be sure to post it on gotapex. I am sure you have made quite a few people jealous of your insanely cheap trip. I know I am.

Oh, I definitely will the next time. I just wasn't an official G|A member back then, and didn't have access to a computer for two weeks thereafter (went camping). I will most definitely be posting it on G|A next time, although I'm surprised that it didn't make it here because it made to FW.

On that note, it is worthwhile to occasionally check Flyertalk.com for some cheap flight deals. These people are genuine experts at finding the best fares and finding tricks to get to a destination cheap. Most of the "deals" would be found under the Mileage Run forum, and be sure to sign up for their e-mail alerts, too (this is how most people at FT found out about the deal initially).
