So I have a p4 2.4, 512 mb ram and a Radeon 9800 Pro card..I have to pretty much run everything around Medium settings and 1024x768 ..I would love to have some stuff up to high..Some AF or AA would be nice too..It seems as if Medium is the only thing I can get and get good gameplay..What kind of settings/fps do you guys have/get? Is this new Shader 3.0 implementation in the new patch going to do much? It seems like no matter how many times I upgrade I can never run everything at max..sigh..

Your card doesn't have shader 3.0 capability so it will do zero for you. However, you only have 512 megs of ram. A gig of ram is really necesary to run games like Far Cry, UT2k4 and whatnot at their best potential. A gig of ram will prolly give you a 5% performance gain, especially in outdoor levels.

Before I got the new vid card, I was running Far Cry on High using a GF 4400 (which is sub par to your card). I have/had a 3.2 and 1 gig of RAM. So I would wager either CPU or memory is the what can keep you out of high graphics level. For very high, you will need a new vid card. Hope it helps.

I have a very similar system (P4 2.4C, R9800Pro, 1GB DC-PC3200 and I have everything turned up to max at 1024x768 with 4X FSAA and A.F. set to Application preference and it runs flawlessly. Game is way hard above normal difficulty, but it runs/looks great.

I aggree with Canta here...512MB of system ram is hamstringing your PC.

I have 256MB RAM in my laptop... no wonder Far Cry wasn't running that well!

That solves the problem of which size additional RAM stick to get, 256 more or 512 more :)
