or when anything gets you down, for that matter?

do you eat?
do you shop?
do you drink?
do you spend the night out?
do you sulk?
do you watch old movies?
do you go out and watch movies?
do you play video games?
do you call your mom?
do you call your sister?
do you call your priest/pastor?
do you pray?
do you go to the gym, vent out your blues on a treadmill, or a punching bag?
do you meditate?
do you cry? bawl your eyes out?
do you hang out with friends?
do you stay over at your friends' place?
do you write poetry or prose?
do you play music? do you strum your guitar? do you play your drums?
do you break stuff?
do you look for a fight?
do you stare at the wall for hours?
do you sleep?
do you have sex?
do you post a lot here or other forums?
do you contemplate your life?
do you create a project to occupy your time?
do you go away and travel?
do you drive, aimlessly for hours, til your gas almost runs out, then head back?
do you stay at home?
do you call out and stay away from work?
do you take a walk?
do you sit in the park?
do you hike up a trail?
do you cook?

for me, depression/the blues = a reason to spend

that is, mostly on things ive been wanting for so long, but just held back due to its non-essential nature (before i got the blues). not that i dont need it - i usually end up using it all the time anyway, so its not like it was useless to begin with. depression tends to push me over the edge of budgetary reason.
though i dont really spend beyond my means - i do know my limits, and as much spending as i do when im feeling down, i dont go overboard and empty my bank account. thats just foolish and dumb.
of course, im glad i dont have a credit card - it would have been maxed out by now. :P

what do YOU do?

I usually play a lot of guitar and also spend a lot of money on stuff that I might not have purchased otherwise. I also tend to go out and drive around town by myself in the middle of the night and just think about stuff.

I have sex/rub one out. Then I eat, then I play guitar. Then I watch a good movie. Then I sleep. A good sleep seems to cap off the rest of the treatment.

Easily...

You just keep piggin' out on stuff you like to make you feel better from the stuff you don't like.

We call it... "comfort food".

I used to sit in my room each night take about 6 shots, play Warcraft, then go to bed.

Then I got a girlfriend who changed everything :)

I'm so jealous. my girlfriend leaving was the cause of my depression. i would say if its sunlight i go outside, cause sun light makes us happy :) Otherwise pop in a movie or maybe hunt down some friends to go out and chat with. When you see how fast the world goes by without you, it helps me realize i need to get on the bus, or just get lost in my own sadness.

There are a couple things that help me...

One has always been spending. I try not to go overboard, but when I'm feeling really down, I've been known to go and make that purchase that I've been contemplating the last few days/weeks/months/whatever.

What I hear a lot, is that exercising works like a charm. Something about the endorphins and this and that. It actually does - it's just that nobody really feels like exercising when they're not feeling well (at least I don't). But if you can get yourself out and moving, I think it makes a big difference.

Also, my friends and girlfriend especially make a big difference. Being around people who you are close to can help tremendously.

PAXIL !!

somehow curves your depression by curving your sleeping habits, I tend to stay awake 18-19 hrs a day now. no jitters or anything like those 'boost' pills do.
magic happy pill.

My question is how can anyone get depressed. Every morning we wake up we're luckier than a lot of people that didn't.... so I figure that alone is worth a smile :)

just my $.02

Paxil is a great drug, but it has a relatively short half life. So if/when you stop taking it, do it VERY slowly, like over several weeks. It's a great drug, but not one of my favorites for most patients b/c of the withdrawal crashes.

I saw one psychologist and one psychiatrist at different times, and after a while, the sessions with the latter kept revolving around my hesitancy to take antidepressants. i'm pretty much at the same place i was then; hanging around a lot, not having the motivation to do the things i once enjoyed doing, coming to a standstill in progress and being way anxious about seemingly small stuff. the negative side of me just kept thinking, yeah, you get a young person to take lexapro (new drug they're pushing), make them a statistic = more of a kickback for you.

he kept recommending different drugs based on their low levels of side effects, but i know that varies drastically depending on the individual and wasn't going to be convinced otherwise. although, i was close to taking wellbutrin. experiencing some of the common side effects of these drugs would be enough reason to exacerbate my crappy feelings :|

I don't know your doc, but he was probably pushing Lexapro b/c it is a very clean drug. One of the biggest problems with that whole class of drugs (called SSRIs) is the number of sexual side effects. Lexapro has fewer sexual side effects than its isomer Celexa and most others in the class (Zoloft, Paxil, etc). They can take a few weeks to work, however.

Anyway, I don't know anyone who gets kickbacks from anyone for prescribing anything, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Most of these new antidepressants help a lot with anxiety as well as depression. I don't push drugs for everyone, but for so many people the difference is simply amazing. If you're still dealing with depression, please don't rule out a trial of medication. If you have any questions, please PM me.
